According to Kilgore, the Nats only offered 3 years and 39 million.  That's 1.5 less per year than what Florida offered.  We can debate all day whether or not that is "fair market value" but they were a year short and 1.5 million short in AAV.  Bottom line is Rizzo didn't get the guy he wanted.  We'll know in a couple of years if he should have gone higher.  If Buehrle owns us for the next few years then Rizzo screwed up.

At this point it's irrelevant, a team that's been cheap for years isn't going to blow a ton of money on posting fees for a Japanese pitcher.

Probably right. Maybe we'll get lucky and Sexy Rexy will pity for the Nats?

That's not really relevant to establishing whether or not Rizzo failed.  If Buehrle contributes to the team and they win as a result of his performance while we're "competitive" but sitting at home in late October it's a failure.

Really? What if Buehrle owns us, but we win the wild card? Did Rizzo screw up then?

Buehrle got 14.5 a year from the fish. Wilson got 15.5 a year from the Angels. Who got fair market value and who got overpaid?

Buehrle screwed up. If Boras was his agent, he would have had a 5/100 deal.

Wilson is underpaid.  Florida coveted him so they offered almost $100 million to get him to choose them over his hometown.  They knew the price and no matter what you can't say they missed out on him for lack of effort.

Considering what Roy Halladay and.Cliff Lee are making, no, he wasn't underpaid.

Wilson is a number 2. He's getting paid a little bit less than the Halos ace. They paid fair market value.

The phish are overpaying for the same reason we overpaid for Werth. Nobody wants to play in Florida. Why would you? They refuse to he competitive and like 3000 fans show up at a game.

Says the guy praying that the HJIC of his team will spend a little cash to get something better than a one year RicKKKK AnKKKiel.  How many WS rings do the Nationals/Expos have again?  How many in the last 10 years?  The jury is still out on people not showing up in 2012, so we'll have to see what effect the Marlins moving 10+ miles closer to downtown Miami is for them.  I guess we'll just have to wait another week or two until the Nats post their $1 Day Games and $2 Tuesday schedule.

What were the other offers? That's about a million a win, which is comparable to what Halladay and.CJ got.

I know you're horny for the Marlins but I'm pretty sure Loria owned the Expos for a while?

Or am I making that up?

Not like Loria is some amazing genius. Though he has made it rain this offseason.

I know nothing about this guy. What will his purpose be other than stealing ABs from Ian/Danny and keeping Lombo down in the minors longer?

Which leads to the questions of why Rizzo even mentioned his interest in Buehrle or for that matter bothered to make a low ball offer that was destined to be rejected.  Was Rizzo's judgment of the market so far off that he actually thought he was making a competitive bid or was he just putting on a show for the fan base?  I don't know which is worse.

oh but remember after the marlins got him and the nats were left without their #1 SP target (and off by almost $20 million) rizzo said, "we're good."

Or maybe he didn't realize the Marlins would overbid by so much

I have to imagine the Buerhle camp would let the Nats have an opportunity to up their offer.

That was option #1, that Rizzo had no clue of the market, probably the worse option than him trying to put on a facade for the fanbase.

I don't know what scares me worse... That Rizzo may be that bad in evaluating what fair market value is... Or that he knew he was low and put out that BS anyways in hopes of making the fanbase think the Nats tried hard.

There are lots of reasons Buerhle was an attractive option, but the Nats scouting report probably began and ended with the fact he was perceived as a cheaper choice than Wilson.  No point in overbidding on a guy when the only reason you're after him is to hope to underbid.
