Pretty good home preseason matchups this year.  Buffalo and Blackhawks (and Columbus).

Guess who's still toolin' for anus on the www:

TheJoeGreene
I'm sure the idiot coach will find a way to avoid playing an enforcer, especially in games against teams like Philly who will pimp slap the little girls like Mikey Green all night long.

None of this matters at all until Big Fat Bald Moron Coach is fired.

Perhaps.  Though he must have some discreet tote bag or jumbo man purse for the carrying of the buttless chaps he'll need for the afterparty when having his folks' Olds Cutlass valet parked.

I didn't get into hockey until 1994 when I bought NHL '94 on the Sega Genesis. I used the Wings and became a fan of them and of the great Steve Yzerman. Once he retired, I kinda became much more casual a fan. Because of my extreme distaste for all sports relating to Pittsburgh, it was only natural that I started following the Caps as their rivalry with the Pens grew more heated. I'm still a rather casual hockey fan, but I'm starting to follow a little closer. All this leads to a few questions:

How well did the Caps do in off season acquisitions?

What's the situation like with the minors and the recent drafts?

Are they good enough to finally break through and make it to the finals?

I'm really looking for objectivity folks. No homers allowed

the caps didnt really need any high end talent going into the offseason. some would say "we need a tough stay at home defenseman" and only three guys in the league would probably fulfill their desires (chara, lidstrom, pronger), none of whom are available. we needed good role players for the third and fourth lines. we got that in ward and halpern. we also added quality power forward brouwer, picked up a solid defenseman with some offensive upside in hamrlik, and for craps and giggles picked up a top five goalie on the cheap.

the caps were good enough to win it all the past two years and have only improved in the offseason. obviously, that doesnt mean they are going to win it all.

the caps have 3 or 4 elite prospects in defenseman Orlov, center Eakin, center Kuznetsov, and throw in goalie Holtby. the first three on that list were three of six players named to the World Junior Championship All Tournament Team last year. Kuznetsov might have been the MVP.  So basically the Caps might have had three of the top six 18 or 19 year olds in the world.  Orlov and Eakin will probably play in the Minors this year and Kuznetsov will stay in Russia this year.  Kuznetsov is even eligible for the Junior tournament again this year

According to Yahho, the GM George McPhee is "cold running" the league. He signed a former #1 overall pick and solid d-man in Hamrlik, acquired a solid forward who fills a need in Troy Brouwer, traded an extra goalie in Varlamov for a 1st and 2nd round pick ( to a likely bad team in the Avalanche, at that), and signed a top 10 goalie in Vokoun for $1.5 million. The vast majority of writers and "experts" will say the Caps had the best offseason of any team.

The Caps have a very top heavy farm- Kuznetsov is very good, Eakin could be a good 3rd line player, Orlov has great ptotential as an offensive d-man (though his defense itself leaves something to be desired), and goalie Braden Holtby has already experienced success in the NHL. overall, however, their system is not deep- I saw a site that ranked it 21. That's not so important though, as tey are a younf team and many of their recent top prospects graduated to the team.

They're good enough. They have been good enough. They just need to be motivated and/or get that extra kick, which they may have gotten this offseason.

Bourque and Eakin looked good last night.  The smaller beers, not so good.

People seemed to be nagging about the white netting. I'll guess I'll find out, or not if they go back to black. Some kind of like it though. I think even if it is a 50/50 split, you gotta stick with the status quo because those who like it probably dont feel as strongly as those who dont (they probably actually hate it)

Last night was the first full radio broadcast by new play-by-play man John Walton - not a bad showing. Really into it but with a less abrasive voice than Screamy Mimi Kolbe.

Chimera earned his extension.  He was a good pickup, with all due respect to Clark.

Attention for anyone going to the season opener, I heard there are going to be some closed stations on the green/yellow line for massive track work. Anyone know for sure?

I understand they need to upgrade, but this is going to turn the Caps two first regular season games into a total crapshow for anyone taking metro. Do they no haz hockey schedulz?

Nats supporters already know that they no haz baseball schedulz.

I fully expect massive track work - single-tracking, shuttle buses, the lot - for our Yankees series this coming June. You heard it here first.

Avery on waivers...too bad we don't have $2 mil in cap room.  I used to hate him, but I've come around a bit on that.
