This.

To me, next year doesn't really matter. We're not going to be in contention. I don't see Rizzo making any big offseason moves this year. Maybe grabbing a true CFer. Its 2013 that will be our year to make the playoffs.

Jesus, what? We're going to be in contention. 2013 will be our year to make the playoffs, maybe, but in 2012 we should gun for 85-88 wins and a shot at the wild card.

80 wins this year + 1 win for not having Slaten + 7-8 wins for having more of Stras/Zim/Zimm = wild card race. And if we grab that "true CFer" then things are even better.

Quote
Commissioner Bud Selig announced that MLB will add two Wild Card teams -- one in each league -- for a total of ten playoff teams. Selig remains hopeful that the change will occur in 2012.

"People can be critical. I understand that," said Selig to reporters (including Danny Knobler of CBS Sports and MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, both Twitter links). "It will be dramatic."
If there is an extra wild card we should be really excited about next season.

Absolutely, it greatly increases the chances of middle of the pack teams to get one of the wild card slots.

Yeah. Next season might be us in a one-game playoff against the Braves/Giants but having already officially become a "playoff team."

Maybe it's just me, but I think of "playoff team" as meaning "division winner".  Wildcards are a scramble for the scraps.  I don't think I've ever heard of a team aiming at building a wildcard roster, and certainly not a #2 wildcard roster.

True, but winning the one game playoff and playing a division winner counts as playoffs to me, in a division as tough as the NL East, more than one team usually deserves to be in the playoffs imo

Does the one-game playoff not count as a playoff game?

I wonder if this setup will cause some fringe teams to build their pitching roster differently...  get two good pitchers instead of one great one.

I hope that the wildcard round will actually be a best of 3 series because I don't hink it would be fair to a team or the fans if their team makes the playoffs and doesn't get a home game.

I'd say it definitely counts. But as you said, the concept being a "playoff team," that's what I was referring to. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of the one game playoff, I wish it were a three game series or something. But if the Nats were the #2 wildcard team and won and got to play the phillies or something, I would be overjoyed.

Harper:  1.038 OPS

So who does that compare to?  I don't know stats much, but I'm pretty sure that's a fairly decent OPS number.
