Looks like both Harper and Norris have the night off but for some reason Walters is starting at third.  why does it seem that Walters is always playing when he is batting .197 and isn't even that good?

The other Scottsdale 3B, Will Middlebrooks, got injured about a week ago.  Walters is probably in a bit over his head, but experience against this level of competition is nothing but a good thing.

solis and lehman combined to give up 5ER in 5IP yesterday.  ugh.  Harper and Norris were both 1-4, Harper with a 2B.

Evolution33 says on Twitter that Matt Purke just pitched a perfect inning in which he hit 97 on the gun and sat in the mid-90s.

Pitch F/X or whatever it's called had him 92-94, and hitting 95 once.  He also threw a slider from 81-84.  He got through the inning on eleven pitches.

Definitely an improvement over high 80s. That's a good sign hitting low-mid 90s.

The guys on MLB Network were unanimous on Harper staying with the team next spring. They said if he hits, he should be the starting RFer ala Ken Griffey.

The 6 errors in 24 games aren't going to play well with the front office.

I'd only be okay with this if we let him play every day through the six-week-long slump that he will start out with. Once he adjusts, he'll be fine, just like in AA and the AFL, but the context of a team on the cusp of genuine playoff contention might mean greater pressure to bench or demote a guy who spends his first month batting .150, even if he has the most promise of anybody in the whole system.

I really think he starts in Harrisburg and is promoted to AAA by Memorial Day. I am guessing that the FO mind set is still he needs to learn the OF and there is no reason to rush him no matter how well he does offensively.

Given that he does start slowly why put that added pressure on him. He has already played for Harrisburg and there shouldn't be a big adjustment after ST. Just my take on it. If he tears it up at Syracuse then I could see a promotion to the  show before September but everything is contingent on what he achieves not on our hopes and expectations.

I forgot to point out that on the same MLB Network show, Mike Rizzo was interviewed and did not rule out Harper making the team in ST.

I am really happy with Harpers progress in the AFL. I am thrilled with Purkes ascension after what can only be described  as a disastrous start.

I predict he starts at Syracuse and ends up on South Capitol Street in June. I have an avatar bet on it with linty. The all-star break is the tipping point for our bet.

This.

To me, next year doesn't really matter. We're not going to be in contention. I don't see Rizzo making any big offseason moves this year. Maybe grabbing a true CFer. Its 2013 that will be our year to make the playoffs.

Are you really punting on 2012 already? Have some faith!

Yes, people, I know the last sentence is ironic coming from me.

I don't think it's out of question that we're in contention next year at all, especially if WC2 is added.  And, I do think he makes a move for a lead-off hitter, which probably comes in the form of a CF, but doesn't necessarily have to and I think he adds one more TOTR arm.
