Well the difference here is that he might actually be worth the money especially given some of the money other players have gotten.

This is not suprising. I saw a feature on him a couple of years ago and he is a really laid back guy.  He sleeps on a fuchsia pillow for some kinda therapeutic reason.  He meditates and stuff.  Didnt seem like a NY/East Coast guy.

I think it was Steve Phillips I heard talking earlier in the off-season about how he would never sign a FA starting pitcher to anything more than a 2 year deal.  He said there are just too many variables and things that can go wrong with a SP.  He went on to say that he would have no problem signing one of his own guys to a long team deal.  I was hoping Zito would wind up in the AL.

Zito's a better than average pitcher, but not much more than that.  But SF has been overpaying for older players a lot, so nothing new for them.

Holy **** that's a helluva contract. Zito hit the jackpot on that one. Props to his agent.

You know, the really shocking thing about this off-season hasn't been the per-year value of the contracts, instead the longevity of the contracts.  On this one, it's not the 18 million a year that shocks me, it's the 18 million a year for SEVEN years that shocks me.
