Derek Jeter gets hit 3,000
« Topic Start: July 09, 2011, 04:03:47 PM »
Derek Jeter just got his 3,000th hit.

I've watched him since he was a rookie. Hard to think of many better all-around ball-players. Fields, hits, goes with the pitch rather than swings for the brainless TV highlight: "Joe Shmoe takes him yard!!!". Never talks dirt about anybody...and there is enormous temptation in NYC to go to the media. Just plays.

My daughter took me to see Jeter get hit 2,000 (?) a couple of years ago. Cold late-season game, light rain all game, but the crowd just wanted to see Jeter. Classic line-drive to right.

Hats off to Jeter.

He's only the 2nd person to reach his 3000th hit with a home run.  I was at the green turtle when it happened.

How's he rate among all time NYY?

Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle, Berra I'd put ahead.  I'm a huge Rivera fan.  I can't name the pre-60s NYY and compare.  I'd say that Jeter and Rivera would be the best since the early 60s team.  That's a half century for the greatest franchise in North American sports, and really 2 clear names above all others.  Guidry had too short a peak, Jackson was also just a few years with NYY and, frankly, didn't pile up the rings with NYY.  Mattingly I think had less of a career, although his peak offense was better.  As much as I think Jeter was not a good fielder (smart fielder, good arm, could deak guys well, and instinctive when he actually had his hands on a ball, but poor range well below his peers like Vizquel and A-rod), a mediocre to bad SS is a better fielder than a good 1b / LF / RF.

The dude who caught Jeter's homer got 4 suite seats for rest of season ($60,000), 3 signed jerseys, 3 signed bats and 3 signed balls. Not bad.

Best part was... the guy asked for none of it. Just wanted to give him the ball back.
