That's because Phil doesn't know the "Old Senators", meaning the Griffith team that moved to Minneapolis after 1960. I once asked him about the 1959 team, an all-time baffling team that had Sievers, Killebrew, Lemon, and Allison, plus Camilo Pascual, that played about .500 ball until late July, and then lost 18 or 19 consecutive games...breaking the MLB record. Phil looked blank, suggested that the Nats had "played over their heads" before the losing streak. Not something you would say if you had been a serious, baseball-card-collecting 10 or 12 year old that season.

Sounds like Phil did not follow baseball closely until the expansion Senators.
