again i think a line-up of:

CF Bernadina
RF Werth
3B Zimmerman
1B Dunn
LF Morse
2B Espinosa
C Ramos
SS Desmond

would've been awesome

I think most of us hoped to keep dunn, but rizzo would have been insane to pay what the white sox paid.  We don't want to become the cubs with a bunch of over-paid declining guys.

Hammond - switch morse to #4 and replace dunn with a healthy laroche and there's not much difference. If laroche put up a .265/25 hr year there wouldn't have been many complaints considering the improved defense at first.

Dunn's dropoff would seem to be more than just a change of position.  As a White Sox fan, I fear it might be the sort of thing that happened to Jermaine Dye.  All of a sudden, age just caught up with him, and his skill set was seriously decreased.  In 2009, he was going along OK, and then suddenly -- he couldn't hit, couldn't field, nothin.  Maybe the White Sox got screwed and bought the house when the roof was about to give out and the water heater explodes.  Its very depressing.
Dye was a good deal older when this happened, I think, and also had an injury history.

Tom Verducci has an interesting take.

The strange decline of Adam Dunn continues. The White Sox have tried a team psychologist, minor league pitchers flown in to throw game speed practice pitches to him and five different spots in the batting order, and Dunn still can't hit. His June (.136) was the worst month of a nightmare season.

Dunn is hitting .019 against lefthanders, .075 with two strikes, .126 at home, .135 after the sixth inning and .171 overall.

and hitting coach Greg Walker can't help him much because Dunn is not a classic student of hitting.

What does that mean?

It means he is not a student of ancient culture.  Before student of hitting talks, he'd need to read a book.

Actually, if Greg Walker isn't the right teacher for Dunn, maybe he'll pay more attention to this one:

B-R's blog had a little entry on Dunn this morning.  They did a theoretical situation where Dunn would have a second half equal to his best second half ever.  His best second half was in 2004 with the Reds, where he went .266, 22 HR, 51 RBI.  If you combine that with his first half total from this season, he would end up with a final line of .224, 29 HR, 80 RBI.

It's not ownage, there's just no reason to think Dunn is finished (yet).  I doubt anyone thinks Werth is finished.

I feel bad, I love Dunn, I think he's a great guy, I just think there's a reason all the GM's stayed away.

But this isn't the reason. This shouldn't be happening. This is the season he should have when he's 38, not 31. He should be happily sitting at .240 with 15 doubles and 20 homers right now. What's happening is unbelievable. He's on pace to go from a 3.5 WAR player to a -2.0 WAR player in a single season.

Dunn hit a homer yesterday and looked like he was about to cry he was so happy.  It's hard not to cheer for the guy.

---------
In response to the ovation, Dunn tipped his helmet to the crowd but was even more appreciative after they cheered him until he came out of the dugout following his home run.

"I promise you it’s a way better feeling that way than the other way," Dunn said. "I appreciate them, especially tonight, sticking with it. The thing about the fans, they boo and stuff because they want to see the team and me personally do so well. That’s how I’ve been looking at it. It makes it more special when they cheer like that."
