No worries, I'm not looking for sympathy or a pat on the back, just explaining why it hasn't been done yet ;)

People have been griping about the lack of embedded video for a while now without any understanding of how time-consuming/tedious it is for me to safely implement something like that in a way that doesn't force it upon people who don't want it.

I am not a programmer (at all!).   However it is not time-consuming and it doesn't "force" anything on anybody.  Just like having the ability to Bold or Underline doesn't force anyone to use it.  Same thing.

For example, here is the code to allow YouTube clips in vBulletins forums:

<object width="425" height="355">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"></param>
<param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param>
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"
   type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"
   width="425" height="355"></embed>
</object>

Then, all one has to to do is paste in the unique number for the clip between .

First of all, that is an absurdly cumbersome solution to expect people to use.  I might as well just tell them all to use Nathan's greasemonkey script if I were going to take that approach.  Secondly, it won't work anyway unless I enable HTML in posts, which is a horribly bad idea and a security risk to boot.  Thirdly, it DOES force embedded videos on people because anyone who posted such a video would be forcing it on everyone else who viewed that page of that thread whether they wanted it or not.

I'm not sure what vBulletin has to do with anything as this is not a vBulletin issue.  SMF is perfectly capable of supporting video embedding with the right mods, but as I said before, that's not something I'm going to do in the middle of the season.  There is a new version of SMF out, and I will likely be looking at both it and vBulletin as possible upgrades this offseason, at which time video embedding will be supported on a per-user basis, if possible.

I be interested to know how many people browse on phones, I know I occasionally ignore people and click were I don't want to scrolling down, having youtube videos close my browser would be very annoying

Why do we need embedded videos?

Any excellent point that I hadn't even considered.

Why do we need embedded videos?

We don't, but I have no problem providing the ability for people who want it.  But I also want to provide the option for status-quo for people who *don't* want it.

If it can be down safely and with a minimum of hassle for the Chief, fine. I like seeing what to click on. But only if it's part of an offseason upgrade; let's remember what brought us all here in the first place- and it wasn't watching vids.

Well I tried one mod for this the other night but it didn't have any per-user options and it slowed down the forum by a factor of ten, so...  no.  The search continues.

I'm not promising I'm going to keep it, but I'm willing to try it out for a bit.

Right, this is my personal feeling on the matter as well, but I'm not opposed to giving people the option.  It has to remain an option, though, not a mandatory thing, which is why I don't want to half-ass it mid-season.

Why not?  The Nats have half-assed the entire season.  :lmao:

i'd much rather have the ability to embed WNFF posts into youtube videos.  Can you make that happen?

My one concern is inappropriate video posting for people who surf at work.

You're way behind in the CMW thread.
