I don't think the N word is acceptable for use, in any age group.

Oh, no I didn't mean that at all. Clearly it isn't, but it's pervasive in rap music/culture/whatev. I didn't mean to imply anything else.

And Patti Smith.  but she's an artiste making social commentary.

As for this stupidity, every employer knows to check facebook and twitter when they hire an employee to check for stupid statements.  How is it the Nats missed this?

That reminds me of a tirade/rant that George Clinton did as a speaker at CMJ when I was working for our college radio station. He was totally nuts sounding, but the N bomb was being dropped left and right. Vernon Reid was the next speaker and totally blanked on what he was going to say. He was stunned as were most of us.

Skin from Skunk Anansie does too, and she is "allowed."

And Randy Newman using the N word multiple times in "Rednecks" in 1974.  That was some serious social commentary.

Agreed that the Nats screwed up big time on this.

Big time Sly fan.

One of my old band used to play that and segue into Prince's "Dance Music Sex Romance".  Man I miss those days.

This kid is mentally 5 years old. Makeup is a scouting criterion. This was poor scouting.

They probably didn't scout him, at all.  They likely just read a report on him...and almost certainly, they didn't interview him.  Remember this is the Rizzo scouting department we're talking about here.

Aren't they the same folks that "scouted" Yunesky "92-94 MPH FB" Maya?

Hey Linty - thanks for putting the Houchins twitter stuff on your website.  I expect the national media will catch up to this story at some point, too.

As far as him being a bigot - I don't know.  I'm willing to reserve judgement on that until I know more about the kid - how he grew up, who is friends and family are, etc.

And it's officially a story. Linty saved all of the tweets, he should share them with Kilgore. I still can't believe Rizzo and company didn't do their due diligence before drafting him. The info was widely available out there.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/post/nationals-looking-into-offensive-comments-by-draft-pick-zach-houchins/2011/06/10/AGvXLKOH_blog.html

Quote
The Nationals are monitoring offensive and vulgar comments made on the Twitter account of Zach Houchins, a shortstop the team picked in the 15th round of this year’s amateur draft.

“We are aware of and investigating the comments,” General Manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement released through a team spokesman after midnight East Coast time. Rizzo was not immediately available for further comment.

Houchins’s Twitter feed was deleted late last night, around the time the Nationals released the statement from Rizzo. It had included rampant epithets depicting African-Americans, many phrases objectifying women and at least one epithet used to describe Chinese people.

Houchins, 18, played this past season at Louisburg Junior College in North Carolina.

I regret not having more information to pass along, as this story warrants more reporting. I will try to have on this story later today.

Gorp Turtleburger has picked up the story. I think a bit of sensitivity training/PR training and this kid can be signed. He's 18.

This is exactly what I hoped would happen - that someone from the Nats would take Zach by the neck, shake the living piss out of him and tell him that sort of thing doesn't fly in the real world.

Hopefully the kid learns his lesson.

he's a 15th round pick, just don't offer him a contract- that will teach him a bigger lesson than any pr training

If he wants to play in Washington, Howard should offer him a scholarship.  That might help his personal growth.

He's not 18, he's a junior in college.

Can we split the Houchins stuff into the thread that JMW started? I think it warrants its own thread, and this area would get less cluttered.

After thinking about this, I still think the Nats should pass on him. It's a PR nightmare. Let him learn his lesson the hard way, not by handing him cash and signing him up for some "sensitivity" class.
