Listen guys. There's a reason Law is working for ESPN and not an MLB team. Need I say more.

Law was right about Detwiler, so he's not totally useless or anything.

That said, he's just one guy, and these baseball pundit types are wrong all the time.  His analysis of Peacock did seem kind of lazy.

He was a #3 starter at best or a reliever.

LoL.

You can say that about 99% of pitching prospects. He went out on a limb there.

Bowden was an idiot, I don't think his #6 pick was seen in the same light as a competent GM's.

Bowden wasn't the only person in the FO.

Really, we're going to argue this? :hammer: How dare I give credit for an accurate prediction and not join the Keith Law hatewagon of indignation.

Thing is, Knorr, I could say, of any given pitching prospect, "he won't make the majors," and I'd be right over 90% of the time.  I could say "he tops out as a third starter or reliever" and that number probably jumps to 95-6%, if not higher.  Where guys like Keith Law are valuable is in helping distinguish between the guys making progress and those that aren't, IMO.  Not based on declarative statements made about a draft pick very early in his minor league career.

My problem with Law here (as I've had other problems with him) is the sloppiness/laziness.

Matt Moore's AA numbers, in that postgame video, were described as "video game" and they are, indeed, outstanding numbers.  Brad Peacock's numbers, at the same level, are better, not by a lot but still better.

Moore has been pegged as one of the top pitching prospects in the minors so his outstanding numbers are no surprise to Law et al.  Brad Peacock isn't regarded anywhere near that.  If you were even kind of curious, you'd wonder why Peacock's numbers are better than Moore's.  Perhaps it would encourage you to do a little research, ie that Kilgore blog entry about his new delivery, to see if there's anything you're missing.  Of course, Law takes the lazy path, and assumes that Moore's great numbers are because he's a top of the rotation, potential ace and Peacock's great, slightly better, numbers are a result of random luck.

Keith Law piles on...

Brad Peacock is 6'1" 175 lbs.

Mike Mussina the master of the knuckle curve was 6'2" 185 lbs.

Bring on the knuckle curve.

Peacock is more like 5'10, 5'11... but if the extra inches help his confidence... I'm all for it!

That is what was listed on baseball-reference.

No, you're right... he is listed at 6'1, even in the baseball programs they hand out at the stadium... I'm just saying in person, he's not that tall.

Kind of like how David Eckstein is listed as 5'6." C'mon son, we all know he's no taller than 5'3."

No, David Eckstein's listed height and weight are 5'7", 165 pounds.  This is an important part of baseball history.  Although in a recent article he was 175 pounds so he's apparently been letting himself go.

I still don't get the undersized for a starter argument. It is kind of hard to look up starting pitchers by height and weight because it isn't a stat, but I found a lot of guys listed around 6'0" and under 200 lbs that had ver successful careers. Greg Maddux was listed at 6'0" 165 lbs., Tim Hudson is listed at 6'1" 175 lbs., Tim Lincecum is a damn leprechaun. Does a starting pitcher have to be at least a certain height and weight? I would understand the argument better if there weren't a bunch of starting pitchers that had good to great careers listed at around the same height and weight as Brad Peacock.

Peacock in person reminds me a lot of Roy Oswalt... in terms of shape and size.

I don't get it either.  If Drew Brees can become one of the great NFL quarterbacks, then why the hell are people fretting about the size of an MLB pitcher?

Interesting.  I didn't realize he was moving up the ladder so fast.  Exciting stuff.

Henry Pavlidis of the Hardball Times looked at the Pitch/FX data from the Futures Game.
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/2011-futures-game-pitchf-x/

Here's a link to Brad Peacock's graph: http://www.hardballtimes.com/images/uploads/Peacock-Brad-502748-class.png

Quote
The Nationals sent Peacock to Arizona last fall, so this was a quick check-up on the 41st rounder from the 2007 draft. He's been outstanding in Double-A this years, sporting a nifty 5.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Like Miller, he didn't crack 95 in this outing but has shown 95+ in his previous PITCHf/x games.

To my not-so-trained eye, it looks like he had good seperation in velocity between his fastball and change-up. The lack of movement on his fastball, however, is a bit striking.

Not a good first start for Peacock in AAA.

First inning is still going and he's already given up 5 with 2 HR.
