i loved watching him pitch in the AFL.  He reminds me a lot of Livan, almost effortless delivery.

Byron Kerr recaps Solis's first win on 6/10, previews his next appearance, and adds:

Quote
Solis allowed three runs in each of his first two starts, and is now 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 16 1/3 innings with 18 punchouts.

With a good start and another win Tuesday, Solis could be very close to making the next step to Single-A Potomac. It would make sense for Solis to begin the second half of the season with the P-Nats.

Sickels wrote about Solis today:

Quote
**Washington Nationals prospect Sammy Solis was activated from extended spring training in late May and has made four starts for Low-A Hagerstown in the Sally League. In his first 23 innings, he has a 3.09 ERA with a 24/9 K/BB, 17 hits allowed, and a 1.65 GO/AO ratio. Solis was drafted in the second round last year from the University of San Diego. A big-body guy at 6-5, 230, Solid pounds the lower half of the strike zone with a 89-93 MPH sinker, has a nasty knuckecurve breaking ball, and mixes in a very good changeup. He has good makeup as well, and could see Double-A by the end of the year.

I think they're going to send a lot of ppl to Potomac after the minor league All-Star break. They'll have college draftees just signing who will be able to come in and replace they're production. So Kelso, Manno, Harper, Solis are all guys who I could see moving up soon.

Yesterday, Solis went 4 innings, 2 ER, 3H, 2BB, 5K vs. Delmarva.  No decision in an 11-4 win.  Gave up 2 in the first, held that until the bats got going in the 3d. First game he's had more air outs than ground outs.

Heading into the Sally League all star break, Sammy has had:
 5GS, 27.1IP, 3.62 ERA, 1-0, 21 H, 11 BB, 1.17 WHIP, 29 Ks, 1 HBP, 3 HR.

Any idea how his velocity is holding up?

I still wonder if the field conditions in Woodbridge are delaying some promotions

I have a feeling that no matter how good Cole/Ray pitch, they finish the year in Hagerstown.

And they should. They're 19, in their first professional season.

They need to be kept at a level they're ready for. Let them build on the confidence and success of this season. Gice them too much too early, and it could stunt their growth.

I haven't seen Ray pitch, but Cole needs to finish the year in Hagerstown, there is no doubt about that in my mind.  He is still very raw despite the numbers he is putting up, a year of professional baseball at Hagerstown will do him good.  Some things he needs to work on:  developing his change and slider, pitching from the stretch, putting away batters in pitchers counts/2 strikes, and throwing less pitches per inning/pitching deeper in games.

Solis' numbers looked pretty pedestrian to me but Kerr's review of the performance is almost glowing.  Low 90's fastball, change was 10 mph slower, and he was locating his curve.  How did the A ball team he was facing manage 7 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings?

That was Brad Peacock's problem before this year. If Solis is a similar fix, then he should be good to go places.
