Follow the prospects: Jack McGeary, LHP

The more I think about it, the more respect and appreciation I have for Jack McGeary, the 6th round/1st round quality pitcher the Nats drafted in 2007, and who went to Stanford while pitching in the minors each summer. I'd lost track of him...so, here he is, and I hope he makes it. (And, at the time, thought that the Nats organization made a smart and a classy decision.)

I've seen him pitch twice. He has a good fastball and an excellent curveball, but both times I saw him his control and command were piss poor.  He underwent TJ surgery last June and probably will not be near game shape until midway through the minor league season at the earliest.  I really hope things come together for him, because he still has some good potential.

Not all 3.5's are equal.

Coaches have been raving about him in Minors Camp lately. He is only throwing at 75%, but they have been working with him on his stance and he has them quite excited.

3.50 righty -- admission denied.
3.50 lefty -- welcome to Stanford

More like:

3.5 on standard curriculum = denied.
3.5 with half AP classes or accelerated curriculum + baseball = Stanford.

More like:

3.5 on standard curriculum = denied.
3.5 with half AP classes at an elite high school + baseball = Stanford.

This... one of the top schools in Boston. I was wait listed there, I remember being pissed because one of the kids in my class got in because his grandfather donated a ton of money.

That whole bribe thing works better at tight budgeted prep schools . . .

I was impressed that McG majored in classics and wrote his senior paper on Plato's Symposium. I'll guess that means he has become fluent in classic Greek. Equally impressed that "McGeary took 20 units per quarter, the heaviest course load Stanford allows, in order to finish on time."

That is serious brain-work.

He made a smart choice to go to Stanford and play also. Don't know what he can do with B.A. in Classics, but crap, he went to Stanford, what can't he do?

And after re-reading I realize that this is a guy who is athletic enough to play pro baseball and smart enough to go to Stanford and study Classics....

Doubt they expect him to know the language at the undergrad level.

He's at Hagerstown, starting: 4 wins, 1 loss, but fairly high ERA. See

Glad to see him back.

Hopefully he can get on track next season and live up to the high hopes we all had for him when he was drafted.
