LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Pat Gillick has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Former players' association head Marvin Miller fell one vote short and late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner also was shy of the necessary 75 percent in voting by the Veterans Committee announced Monday.

Gillick, who spent 27 years as general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies, will be inducted into Cooperstown during ceremonies on July 24 along with any players chosen next month by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

He was the only candidate selected among 12 finalists on the Expansion Era ballot considered by the Hall of Fame's Veterans Committee, which votes on managers, umpires, executives and long-retired players for membership.

Gillick received 13 votes, or 81.25 percent, from the panel. Miller had 11 votes, or 68.75 percent, while Dave Concepcion, who played shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds' 1970s "Big Red Machine" teams, got 8 votes, or 50 percent.

Steinbrenner received less than eight votes, as did players Ted Simmons, Vida Blue, Steve Garvey, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, Billy Martin, Al Oliver and Rusty Staub.

It's a joke Marvin Miller still can't get in.

The biggest injustice is Bert Blyleven... I can't believe they haven't sorted that out yet in an era where Felix can win Cy Young.

Agreed.

Blyleven is one of those guys that will get in the year he dies.

It's unfortunate, but it seems like his open politicking for his induction is actually hurting his overall chances.

 Even though he helped Philly, I've always respected the hell out of Gillick.  One of the great GM's of our time.

LOL @ the Orioles for firing him (and Davey Johnson) in 1997
