Rizzo says he's going to wait for the Nats ownership to initiate extension talks.  He's going into his last year.

Lerners definitely don't appreciate being negotiated with in the press, so he's probably playing it right.  I would expect however, that come Oct / Nov next year he's going to be highly sought after if he isn't locked up ahead of time.

Rizzo's position is understandable.  But I don't understand why he needed to go public.  That's not going to help matters.

Rizzo turned the Nationals from a 100-loss team to a playoff perennial with four division titles, plenty of star power and endless October intrigue failure.

Fixed...

In Vermont, they have translators for that conversation.  It is actually an Lewis and Martin routine.

“When you look at what we accomplished,’’ says Rizzo, “it’s really unsung and underappreciated. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished here. I like it here. I love the city. I love the team I put together. I like being a GM in the NL East. And I want to stay here. I just think I deserve to be treated like some of the best GMs in the game are, too.

Don’t the best gm’s in the game have rings?

Not necessarily. I think most people would say that Friedman is one of the best and he doesn't have a ring.

Billy Beane too.

Okay, but I don't think Beane is that great of GM. I think he ran into a formula that worked, but since then, his teams have struggled and he's made some poor deals.

Without Jonah Hill, he is nothing.  Rizzo's the man.

He created a unique path forward, but it depended on uniqueness and everyone copied him so it took away the competitive advantage to a significant extent.

One wonders what he could do, or could have done, with a better than average budget.

He’s at least taken two teams to World Series

He gone

Gone like a freight-train, gone like yesterday
Gone like a soldier in the civil war, bang bang
Gone like a '59 Cadillac
Like all the good things that ain't never coming back

Rizzo making those comments points to an extremely toxic atmosphere in the Nats front office. Not the first time.

I can't see Rizzo back. And if the Nats don't make it out of the NLDS then it is probably time for a divorce.

2020, he'll be able to hire a couple more managers before then.
