Can anyone explain how his knuckleball works? How does he throw it so much harder than everyone else?

I've screwed around with trying to throw one... but the harder I throw it, the more it spins.

I'd love to know how he throws it fast and keeps the spin down.

I wonder if he and Wakefield throw the pitch differently.

For those going today - temperature expected to top off at 92 - hydrate properly and take any other appropriate precautions.

...leaving now...AFTERNOON BASEBALL RULES!

Try not breaking your wrist, or keeping your wrist flexed back and stiff.

I don't know how Dickey throws his, but the velocity doesn't affect the amount of spin on mine, and that's how I throw it.

Dickey's knuckleball averages 76 MPH, Wakefield is at 66.

If you look at Chief's pic of Dickey, could it be the 3/4 to sidearm delivery?  Perhaps the angle helps him hold the ball a bit longer which allows better arm speed?  Just grasping straws....

The guy I catch that throws a knuckler throws it from a pure sidearm angle.

It might have to do with height, arm length, arm strength... I don't find the difference in speed between dickey and wakefield surprising. Just because it's the same pitch doesn't mean it will be the same speed. I bet the difference between them is a lot less than my fast ball vs. Chapman's

Found an interesting read on the whole velocity thing.

Quote
"We have two different styles," he said. "I still have more arm strength than he does, just because I was a conventional pitcher before I became a knuckleballer. He was a position player. I still have a little bit of a fastball. And my knuckleball is probably on average about 6 or 7 mph harder than his.

"That doesn't make it better. That's just the way it is. If you ask somebody that was intimate with what a knuckleball does and is, I'd say they would probably liken me more to Joe Niekro, Phil's brother -- a guy who threw kind of hard and mixed in other pitches as well from time to time. But if we're throwing it good, then it's good. It comes out with no rotation and then it's hard to hit."

True. I've seen more ways to throw the knuckleball than I have any other pitch.

I hate the fact that I'm in the midst of fantasy playoffs and my opponent has both Zimmerman and Dunn on his team.

Dickey is really, really good.  All we can hope for is that Livan doesn't blow up and the Nats get a few runs off him.
