BIG NEWS:

According to Barry Svrluga's chat today...

Barry Svrluga: NEWS NEWS NEWS

The Nationals claimed outfielder Kenny Kelly off waivers from the Reds and designated Wil Cordero for assignment. Kelly hit .333 in seven games with the Reds, and hit .326 with nine doubles, four triples, three homers, 17 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 22 attempts in 61 games for Class AAA Louisville.

And yes, you're right: It's that Kenny Kelly, the one wo used to play QB for the University of Miami.

Cordero, 33, was hitting .118 for the Nationals. Manager Frank Robinson like Cordero's clubhouse presence, but he was 0 for 14 as a pinch hitter and 0 for 18 with runners in scoring position.

Freeing up a roster spot?

Hard to see Kenny Kelly as an important piece who has just got to be on the MLB roster unless we're trying to corner the market on outfielders.

Maybe this is a part of a bigger plan, besides getting rid of a horrible player, this could be the first step towards a trade for some much needed offense!!

Man, Jim Bowden and his love for outfielders is frigging nuts... With this move the Nats are down to one spare infielder (even while he's playing 1B, I still count Wilkerson as an OF) and they now have six outfielders on their active roster...

Seems like a boneheaded move to me...

UNLESS, he is using the waiver claim as an excuse to dump Cordero, in which case, the man's a genius....

Naww

I think kelly has zip to do with anything except maybe to replenish new orleans when prospects go in a multi-player deal (and of course its a chance for Bowden to stick it to the reds by grabbing him).

Guessing we don't have so many outfielders by tomorrow.

Would rather Bowden find an infielder. I see an outfielder or two being dealt to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo or Danny Baez.

That's my thought as well... Not even Jim Bowden is THAT crazy... Or is he?
Me thinks the Nats will have a slightly revamped lineup for the Houston series...

I'm actually surprised this is taking so long. Seems odd to clear the roster spots this far in advance as, among other things, it tips off other teams - tho maybe that was Bowden's idea in some Machiavellian scheme tp pressure "seller' teams

Wonder if there is a hangup.

Yea, the guy in the GM chair in Washington has no balls... I fully don't expect any deals to be made in the next 10 days... The next major trade will be made by Bowden's replacement...
