Ugh, I was sure that was a HR. Looked like he made perfect contact, and it wasn't hit that high in the air. Nice hit regardless of the outcome. Alberto seems to be getting in the groove playing more often.

Camera confused me as well. Thought it was gone!

Burnett is lights out tonight. Excellent to see him performing well against both right handers *and* lefties tonight.

Hot damn, Dunn hit another one?! Don't sign him until he ends this crazy hot streak.

Alright, so I guess our lucky closer of the night will be Storen?

Maxwell 0-4 with 4Ks. His defense is amazing, and he's an excellent baserunner. But his offense at the major league level is downright embarrassing. He's hitting well under .100 for the season now. And 0-4, 4Ks... Speaks for itself.

Anyone else think this may be the end of J-Max?

Absolutetely. We've got a glut of OFers as it is. This was his last start until they send him down again for a pitcher coming off the DL or rehab. He's done, and I expect he'll be non-tendered instead of returned to Syracuse. He's so incredible defensively, but that can't save him. This was his put up or shut up year, and tonight his final chance to prove himself.

There is a small chance they keep him around for Sept call ups, but at this point I don't see why they should. He simply cannot hit to save his life. He's a worse hitter than the average pitcher.

If he gets cut, I guarantee that J-Max will end up in Cleveland. Manny loves his former Nats, and, from what I've read, he really likes J-Max.

Note some dedication: 6 members and 6 guests crazy enough to be here for the bottom of the 9th!

People are picking up the old-time Nats dedication.  There was a season in the late '50s when only about 700 fans showed up at Griffith Stadium for one of the last home games. The Senators were about 30 games out of 1st, it was a cold September evening, and there were 700 people ready to cheer for the team. Two years later, the team battled for .500 and a first division finish, and there weren't really enough seats to hold everyone. (Capacity about 25,000, including the bleachers and many seats behind poles supporting the upper deck.)

It just takes a team with some life and a fighting chance.

And a WIN.

Hail to this generations fans!

And another curly W is official. 3-2 on the west coast road trip so far, pretty darn good.

On another note, who on earth would have imagined that, after waiting several years to start my first game day thread, I'd go 1-0 after doing so on John Lannan versus Clayton Kershaw?!? I was just taking one for the team since we were about to not have a game day thread when the game started.

Still, even though a win is a win, there were three concerning things with this game. First, Lannan got ridiculously lucky and is still a head case. He shows flashes of brilliance at times, but that's just not going to be enough when he's as bad as he is some innings.

Maxwells four Ks speak for themselves, he's just about done with this organization.

And while we won, with six runs no less, I feel the need to point this out. We didn't score a run after the third inning. We didn't score any runs apart from Dunns two HRs. We almost definitely get shutout without two blasts from Dunn that were almost foul. We certainly don't win without them. The offense is still rather disconcerting, and this seemed like it was, apart from Maxwell, one of our best lineups of the year. The offense is scary looking down the next two months after failing to genuinely destroy Arizona, the awful pitching team that it is.

But a wins a win, and we'll take what we can get. A decent game, and no errors, awesome performance by Burnett and the bullpen at large.

Maxwell may be worth keeping around as a strict 5th OF'er (pinch runner, defensive replacement)

Only problem with that though, is if the team needs an extra pitcher or another position player, Maxwell would have to be the first player to go.
