I think the family leave (I hate calling it "bereavement" since that is not its exclusive purpose) is limited to 7 days. Since her due date is 8/22 and they will induce labor on 8/23 if she is later than that, Wil's leave would not take him out to 9/1, so the Nats cannot use family leave to manipulate the 25 man roster until the roster expansion. That suggests maybe just Maldonado rather than Ramos.
Wilson Ramos, C, Nationals (VEN: Tigres)Looking to gain some more experience before going into next spring with a shot to earn a big-league catching job in Washington, Ramos began getting some extra at-bats in his native land over the weekend, going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles in his season debut for Aragua. He remains a plus defender with above-average pure hitting ability, but a lack of secondary skills will likely prevent him from being a star. At least he'll be an upgrade over Ivan Rodriguez if Pudge is willing to end his career as a backup.
I'm guessing he'll be close to a league average bat this year with superior defense.
and really, that's all I want from a catcher
Ramos is putting up a 1.127 OPS through his first 6 VWL games. SSS for sure, but he hit at every level until struggling a bit last year. I'm guessing he'll be close to a league average bat this year with superior defense.
Well, unless you want Guzman v.2 up there, he would need to learn to take a walk. Those type of secondary skills.
But he's not a catcher.Catchers don't have his speed. Thus, if you tried to put his skill set in a catcher, you'd have a .230-.240 hitter with a .270 OBP.
