I'm pretty sure the Turtle is right. When I've gone to the track with the Mrs., the only outcome is "I Lose" or "We win".

What a great song though.   I spent some time in Lake Charles, LA when I was in infantry training at Ft. Polk ... but that's another story for another time.

Oh, I'm sure that's a possibility.   I googled the lyrics.   I never heard the song straight so I wasn't sure ...   :glug:

What about those people from MIT that figured out a system to win at Blackjack? Surely they would have not eventually lost money, right?

Don't be dense. Once you start counting cards, it's deterministic. That's why the blacklist you from casinos. Poker is a skill and if acquired you can earn money at it, too. But I don't have the time or desire. Slots, Roulette (fun bets on black and red are reasonable, what is it, a 47% chance of a win?), craps, etc., are fun pursuits but should be recognized for what they are. Lottery tickets are a tax on the uninformed.

Exactly ...

Someday Blue should decipher these lyrics, here's an exerpt:

Quote
...She was workin’ in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin’ at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I’s just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "don’t I know your name? "
I muttered somethin’ underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a
pipe
"i thought you’d never say hello," she
said
"you look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
Tangled up in blue.
....

I wasn't being dense... I was actually asking if it was possible to be a winner at blackjack.

Sorry, my bad, I reread your post and it was an honest question. My apologies.

By counting cards, you can build a system that is a guaranteed win. It's not even illegal (how could it be), but they exercise their private propery rights and bar you from coming back if you pull it off.

And if you believe Hollywood, they beat the crap out of you, too.

Lottery tickets are a tax on the stupid.  The odds of winning are so remote, if you are a regular Lottery player, you are better off sticking the money in a coffee can and buying Christmas presents at the end of the year.

I prefer "uninformed" because the vast majority of the tickets are bought by people with low income, so it's even sadder. In PA at least it goes towards services for the elderly.

That's what your state government may be telling you.  Here in Illinois, when the state lottery was enacted, we were told it was going to support public education.  At first it was, but soon, the General Assembly diverted the lottery funds into the general fund.  In today's budget crises, my bet is lottery earnings are paying whatever the state wants to use it for, not for the altruistic purposes it may have started out as.

It's in a commercial, it must be true ;)

I think the DC lottery funds the account for Barry's next retirement party.
