Updating the StubHub Stock Ticker to roughly 24hr later:

Friday 4th vs Reds - 2,660 (+6.0%)
Saturday 5th vs Reds - 847 (+3.4%)
Sunday 6th vs Reds - 603 (+14.9%)
Tuesday 8th vs Pirates - 1,073 (+233.2%)
Wednesday 9th vs Pirates - 1,657 (+45.9%)
Thursday 10th vs Pirates - 696 (+23.0%)

I can't make heads or tails of that activity.  It seems people are dumping tickets instead of buying.  You'd think people would be buying Pirate series tickets instead of selling.

Maybe people are putting tickets up for sale in hopes of cashing in.

Hopefully some of these people "stuck" with tickets to the 4th actually go and enjoy a baseball game.

Here are what I think are the most likely scenarios.

Option 1: Livan pitches on 4 days rest on the 3rd, Strasburg pitches the 4th.  To me this makes the most sense, plus it would give Strasburg/Livan 6 days before their next starts.
2nd - Lannan
3rd - Hernandez
4th - Strasburg
5th - Atilano
6th - Stammen
7th - OFF DAY
8th - Lannan
9th - Hernandez
10th - Strasburg

Option 2 Strasburg pitches the 4th for Syracuse (can't imagine they will start him the day before @ Buffalo), his 5th day would be the 9th, giving Livan 6 days for the 10th OR You can pitch Livan on 5 days on the 9th and Strasburg on the 10th.

2nd - Lannan
3rd - Martin
4th - Hernandez
5th - Atilano
6th - Stammen
7th - OFF DAY
8th - Lannan
9th - Hernandez/Strasburg
10th - Hernandez/Strasburg

I really don’t see the 8th as an option

Yeah Hondo, I have the same feeling.

Regardless, next Friday we either get to see Livan Hernandez or Stephen Strasburg toe the rubber for the Nats.  I'm down with that.

I wonder how much money I could have made if I'd bought a block of 4 seats for every game in the first two weeks of June?

In my section you might get about a six-fold return - StubHub shows two seats for that evening in section 312 row F, five rows behind TBSITH, offered at $134 apiece (I pay $20/match, STH rate, for TBSITH)...earlier on, I had seen four seats in that same row for Friday's Reds match at $129 a go.

Fixed.

That's a lot of games you'd be selling for below cost, in order to make money on one game in particular.

Maybe one of you stat dorks can give us a cost benefit analysis using some thing like "Value Over Replacement Ticket?"

The stats show that people don't show up to see players.

You don't think people will be showing up just to see Strasburg pitch?  Why are we having all this discussion about June 4 or June 8 or whatever date it is?

Sarcasm. You remember some of the discusions from before the season and the "Baseball Economist" book.

Sorry.  I generally agree, that in the long run, it's wins and losses that will matter.  But for the rest of this season, Strasburg will be a phenomenon.

I think it is one of those things that is dismissed because it can't be measured. There is really no control. There is no way to say go back to 2006 and play the season without Soriano, and see if less people show up. The far end of the spectrum on stat people seem to just throw out stuff that can't be measured like clutch, players drawing, protection, productive outs, and other stuff.

Do you have any idea how much I spent for a block of four 5-dollar seats in the first game at Nats park?  I'd turn a profit easily.  Probably a not-insubstantial one.
