They probably want to give him a long look so that it will never be said that he was not given a fair shot. This way, if he fails completely, they can move on to other options and know for certain that he isn't the answer. That's all I can think of.

And you are probably right.  He turns 26 next month, and he probably is on the wrong side of "make or break" right now.

bernadina is being given his shot now ... and he's completely wasting it ... if you aren't going to be a powerful offensive weapon you're gonna have to be able to do the little things like sac bunts and draw walks.  he hasn't done any of those things.  his speed is average, but it doesn't do us any good if he can't get on base.

his glove is the best thing going for him, but it's not spectacular
