Ok, someone not snarky tell me why Badtista pitched in the 9th in a one run game. Or did he just eat a bunch of innings?

He pitched because Clippard and Capps were getting the night off.

8-3 in one-run games...  I have flashbacks to 2005 and hear "law of averages" ringing in my head when I hear that stat.

The Nationals were DEAD LAST in virtually every batting category in 2005.  We have respectable or good rankings for batting and pitching this year, although our 2010 pitching has some of the fewest strikeouts in MLB.  We were tied for #1 in triples hit, before tonight.

But we LEAD MLB in saves, something we were near the bottom of for years.  So I don't think the "Law of Averages" applies to THIS team, as they specialize in winning close games, and have the talent to do it.

And today is LUIS ATILANO's BIRTHDAY...

Huge win. But we seriously need some reinforcements in the bullpen and some more offense if we want to sustain this success.

Congrats to Atilano

Zuckerman during the game, it's self-explanatory:

because everyone else who isn't capps or clippard sucks just as much as Batista does, and Riggleman drew straws.

contrary to popular belief, breaking Clippard and Capps' arms in the middle of May is NOT a good idea.

This was one of my favorite gameday threads ever. It's also the longest of the season by about 250 posts.

One difference between 2005 and this year besides the bats are much better, is that after the all-star break the Nats kind of fell off or tired out. This year we will be looking to add Jesus and hopefully Wang in June, with Detweiler and Zimm coming behind them. We will actually be improving the team! OMFG this is so awesome, I love this year's squad. It's so nice to finally be winning again.

...and now the Nats will get at least to 12th May without having been swept in a series - continuing the record penetration into the season.

Nats are now 18-14...last season it took till 17th June to get that 18th win (against 46 losses; 3-2 win at the Yankees)...that's progress.

Speculation on RF moves or reinforcements split off and merged into the RF thread:
