An employee of the Rangers, who apparently was leaving on less than friendly terms, tried to extract concessions from the Rangers in return for him pledging not to go to the press with the story.  They apparently balked at giving him a good letter of recommendation (showing some moral fortitude, at least) at which point he went to the press.

Seems to me that ought to qualify as blackmail.
