Balester getting rocked again today.

3 IP 7 H 5 ER 3 BB 2 K 1 HR. ERA up to 9.68. Might be time to move him to a relief role.

Does he still have the stache?

Can we move on from the Collin Balester era yet and let Thompson or Strasburg get a chance they deserve?

Thompson's already starting for Columbus.

But Balester needs to move to the 'pen or something so we can have Strasburg phase 2.

Actually Thompson was moved back down to AA today per Adam Kilgore

Balester is not holding back Strasburg, nor is any other pitcher on our AAA roster.

Quote
The Washington Nationals made a handful of player moves Monday that will affect Class AA Harrisburg, notably demoting left-handed pitcher Aaron Thompson from Class AAA Syracuse.

In addition to Thompson's move, infielder Ofilio Castro will rejoin the Senators from extended spring training and infielder Nick Johnson will come to Harrisburg from short-season-A Vermont. Also, infielder Adam Fox and outfielder Michael Daniel were placed on the disabled list. Daniel is retroactive to last Thursday.

I don't want to give up on Balester but I think he'll have a better time in the pen. crap, he might even be up here quicker as a reliever than a starter. Hes got the stuff to shut down for an inning or two.

Interesting on the Thompson move.

I'm guessing they communicated before hand that he was going to get a spot start and then sent back down... I hope.

Chuck James was slated to replace Atilano so I don't know how they fit in a spot start for Thompson. It's clear that he and Strasburg should be in AAA soon. Right now, Balester is hogging up one of those spots. Not to mention that Detwiler and Wang need spots too.

Thompson started in place of J.D. Martin on Saturday.  I've seen no explanation anywhere as to why.

Jack McGeary is one of the most bi-polar pitchers I have seen.  Line for today:

7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 SO, 13 GO v 4 FO

Hagerstown tied 0-0 in a pitchers duel currently in the 8th inning.

Well, he's still young.

I am a bit sad about his lack of strikeouts so far in his career.

Then again, I'm a big fan of FIP pitchers. High K's, low BB's and HR's.

The less you rely on your defense as a pitcher, the better.

Always prefered the strikeout artist to the sinkerballer.

Yeah, when I say the most bi-polar pitcher I have ever seen, that includes young pitchers.   As for the strikeouts, I'm not concerned about those, he has games where he will get 7, 8, or 9 SO and has maintained over 8 K/9 for his career.  His problems are in two areas.  First, the control/command.  He has some days where he can not hit the strike zone and it is made worse by his sharp curveball.  When the curveball isn't hitting spots, he has to rely on his fastball.  Which is his second problem.  The fastball is a good pitch, but it tends to flatten out every now and then.  When this happens, combined with a curveball that is missing, he becomes an extremely hittable pitcher.  He still has tons of potential, but unfortunately he only has this year and next year before he is eligible for the Rule V.

In the good news category, Mr. Clutch JP Ramirez just drove in Destin Hood for the go ahead run, followed by a Sandy Leon RBi putting the Suns up 2-0 over the O's farm team Delmarva.

The problem is that most pitchers tend to not be strikeout artists so learning to pitch (as opposed to throw) is important. But his margin for error becomes much smaller.

Given Rizzo's predilection, I'd get used to sinkerballers

Agreed.

And, of course I know that strikeout guys don't grow on trees... and the fact that sinkerballers on average give up less bases per hit than a fly ball pitcher...

Really, all that matters to me, is a guy who gets outs.

Any estimate on the percentage of sinkerballers they took last year out of their total number of pitchers drafted and signed?

Ron Villone was activated from the DL in Syracuse, Andrew Brown was "sent to Vermont" (i.e. extended spring training).

How is that possible?  Hasn't Brown pitched very well in Cuse?

WHAT?

Brown was off to a solid start as well. Plus, he's a proven MLB reliever... who doesn't walk guys at will, like Villone does.

Not happy with that move at all.

Yes he has.

No clue. I can make an inquiry but I fully expect the traditional baseball non-answer answer
