Nats sign Jerry Owens
« Topic Start: December 08, 2009, 05:52:35 PM »
per Blobscum's twitter feed: http://twitter.com/washingnats

Quote
The Nationals signed outfielder Jerry Owens to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training. I'll have more soon.

I don't know much about Owens, other than he seems like defensive-minded outfield filler. In 118 major league games (a small sample size) Owens put up a UZR/150 of 14.2 split between all three outfield spots, with most of his innings coming from center field. Not much with the bat (.294 career wOBA) but he can swipe a bag or two, with a career 80% success rate.

The Jerry Owens that the Expos drafted?  2003 2nd round?

MLB Trade Rumors just picked it up. Ladson's still the only source I've seen.

Ha, I signed this guy after the 2009 in my The Show franchise. Hit .295 with 20 SB for me off the bench.

Obviously the Nats aren't as high on Bernadina as you thought SF.  Haha, he'll probably be a AAA/Syracuse filler.

Minor league deal. Whatever. I wonder what they're doing in Indy today. We got spoiled with all the action yesterday, so Jerry Owens being the result of Tuesday is disappointing. Blockbuster midnight trade, please!!

The new Ryan Langerhans, maybe?
My immediate thought

I would rather have Ryan Church back as he was DFA today by the Braves

No, that was definitely last night. About midnight Houston time ... I was awake and watching "The Matrix Reloaded" when the news broke.

I'm guessing the Nats will have the 25th roster spot reserved for some outfielder who can fly, be a defensive replacement, but can't hit.  They may give Willie Mays Hayes a non-roster invite.

Bernie fits that bill but he can hit too.

As does J-Max.  Willie Harris hits too well and has slowed down.

I don't know what hammonds has against Bernie. A shame he got injured last year or he would have really turned some heads.

i don't have anything against him, i'm just confused as to why you think he's something great.  he's 25 dude and hasn't done anything in the minors to make me think he's gonna be anything useful.

Bernadina will likely make the team as a backup OF, so Syracuse needed a new starting CFer.

look at his '08 season in the minors. outstanding numbers.

He has great speed, plays phenomenal defense, and he has finally turned the corner with the bat after changing his approach.

I hope he is fully recovered from that terrible injury last year and is ready to kick ass in '10 for the Nats. :whip:
