Better not be like the yahoos who thought the Yankees could have snagged Strasburg if the Nats didn't sign him. They have to make a trade, and the Nats have to agree . . . He won't come cheap.

Stringfellow expects multiyear offers, though Wagner turns 39 in July.

The FOX authors speculate on possibilities for the remaining three teams by mentioning the Tigers, Cubs, Mariners, Rangers, White Sox, Rays and Marlins.

Washington's interest in Wagner and Mike Gonzalez makes you wonder if they'll tender a contract to their current closer, Mike MacDougal. MacDougal is due a raise on this year's $2.65MM salary. Perhaps they just like him more for a setup role.

Certainly nothing will happen with Wagner until after December 1st, when we learn definitively whether the Red Sox will offer arbitration.

As for what the Red Sox would offer for Willingham - I have not seen any speculation about what is fair value and what they would have to offer. How soon after arbitration is accepted can a player be traded? FA contracts have a time protection of like 60 days? I wonder if they would do Willingham for Wagner with Boston paying for Wagner . . .

Interesting idea. The Nats can avoid giving up the second rounder that way. I am not sure who would pay what. I don't see the Nats getting salary relief on Willingham, Wagner for no cost, and the Red Sox losing out on the comp pick as an inducement to trade (sell) Willingham. Perhaps agreeing to pick up the difference between the arbitration awards. Nats effectively get their reliever and keep the #2 pick in exchange for Willingham. I'd still like a prospect back for the Nats, too.

I don't agree about him crashing, but I don't see how you give up a pretty good outfielder who team controlled for the next two seasons for a closer who you will have one year when you are not a contender.

Just idle speculation on my part, didn't advocate it. Willingham might be part of a mild surplus, but yeah, the compensation picks plus a year of Wagner, not sure I like it.
