Better not be like the yahoos who thought the Yankees could have snagged Strasburg if the Nats didn't sign him. They have to make a trade, and the Nats have to agree . . .  He won't come cheap.

Boy, you were a terrible third base coach - I bet you'll be even worse at bench coaching. Wait a minute . . .

Nats showing interest in Wagner?

Quote
Eight clubs have expressed interest in free agent closer Billy Wagner, according to his agent Bean Stringfellow (Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reporting).  Stringfellow generously named five of the suitors: the Red Sox, Braves, Nationals, Astros, and Orioles.  The agent says Wagner's Type A status hasn't scared teams off, and that of these five only the Red Sox spoke about a non-closing role.  Stringfellow expects multiyear offers, though Wagner turns 39 in July.

The FOX authors speculate on possibilities for the remaining three teams by mentioning the Tigers, Cubs, Mariners, Rangers, White Sox, Rays and Marlins.

Washington's interest in Wagner and Mike Gonzalez makes you wonder if they'll tender a contract to their current closer, Mike MacDougal.  MacDougal is due a raise on this year's $2.65MM salary.  Perhaps they just like him more for a setup role.

Certainly nothing will happen with Wagner until after December 1st, when we learn definitively whether the Red Sox will offer arbitration.

Stringfellow is trying to bluff the Red Sox out of offering arbitration to Wagner but Epstein is saying that they may do so.  Another angle on Wagner -Arbitration could be viable option

If Billy Wagner is willing to work as a setup man for Jonathan Papelbon, the Red Sox aren’t averse to the idea of the veteran lefthander accepting salary arbitration.

As for what the Red Sox would offer for Willingham - I have not seen any speculation about what is fair value and what they would have to offer.  Look at posts starting on page 5, around #87, in this thread. http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?showtopic=49884&st=80&start=80  It's fan talk, but note that Van is on the Red Sox payroll. He's pretty high on JW, and there really is no one arguing too much that the evaluation is wrong.

We (the Nats) should not deal him unless we get blown away by the offer because he is a terrific #5 hitter in our order.  If I were to speculate, I'd ask for one of Reddick or Kalish (both rated 4-star by BP, equivalent to a ##50 -100 prospect in all the minors), plus something else. They are a little thin on position prospects above high A.  There may be a buy cheap opportunity on Michael Bowden.

How soon after arbitration is accepted can a player be traded? FA contracts have a time protection of like 60 days? I wonder if they would do Willingham for Wagner with Boston paying for Wagner . . .

Interesting idea.  The Nats can avoid giving up the second rounder that way.  I am not sure who would pay what.  I don't see the Nats getting salary relief on Willingham, Wagner for no cost, and the Red Sox losing out on the comp pick as an inducement to trade (sell) Willingham.  Perhaps agreeing to pick up the difference between the arbitration awards.  Nats effectively get their reliever and keep the #2 pick in exchange for Willingham. I'd still like a prospect back for the Nats, too.

I'd rather have Willingham than Wagner by a ton. He's gonna crash next year.

I don't agree about him crashing, but I don't see how you give up a pretty good outfielder who team controlled for the next two seasons for a closer who you will have one year when you are not a contender.

Just idle speculation on my part, didn't advocate it. Willingham might be part of a mild surplus, but yeah, the compensation picks plus a year of Wagner, not sure I like it.

From the St. Louis paper

Quote
Free agency is not the only option available as Mozeliak concedes the club may also pursue trade options. The Cardinals heavily scouted the Washington Nationals before last July's trade deadline and retain interest in outfielders Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham. Dunn, who has averaged 41 home runs and 101 RBIs the last six seasons, is entering the final season of a two-year deal that pays him $12 million in 2010.

Fixed.  Though we'd have to get Mozeliak stoned first.

The Pirates signed lefty Wil Ledezma to a minor league deal, according to a team press release.  Ledezma, 29 in January, bounced around in the Nationals and Blue Jays organizations this year.  He compiled a 3.49 ERA in 38.6 innings at three minor league stops, whiffing over a batter per inning but walking 4.2 per nine innings.

MLBTR.

wtf are the nats doing? while other teams are stocking up and making shrewd moves we haven't heard a peep from the nats all off-season.

Wil Ledezma is your idea of a shrewd move?
