right, so last.fm has the same streaming rights as the other services. Take a band I want to listen to, Insomnium. Last.fm only has 1 album available to stream. Napster has 1 plus a new 3
song EP.

imeem has lots of songs from other albums that people uploaded. Because of their deal with the distributor for Insomnium's label, Candlelight Records, the songs that people upload can be legally streamed, since they get a cut of the ad revenue while I listen to bands on that label. So imeem gives you access to songs you can't stream anywhere else. Pretty cool, but their interface is really sucky right now.

i use audacity all the time. the entire station uses it for audio editing (cutting highlights, recording stories, etc)

free, easy to use, i love using it.

Audacity is the best. Some of the cheaper USB turntables come with it on CD. It's very nice.

Arent they being bought by google? I thought for sure that google was starting thier own music search and buying business and that it was coming from lala.

Partnered for now, AFAIK. There was a Slate parnter article on google music search yesterday. Like I said, I don't like their business model at all, and before they were a cd trading service, which is kind of dumb, but their mp3s are CHEAP.

Mine did, but I admit I haven't really figured out what to do with it (Audacity) yet.

My little USB to RCA box came with a proprietary suite that's tailored to processing input from LP's (special filters for clicks and pops, etc.)

Audacity is a full-fledged audio editing suite. As UMD mentioned it's suitable for use at a radio station. Has to be good for trimming tracks, boosting the volume, and I know it comes with some nice noise filters and such. It's a fun toy to play with - I use it to make mp3 ringtones.

Once you buy a song from them at their reasonable prices (just got a 20 song album from 7.50 that was 10 bucks at Amazon), you get unlimited streaming of that song, so you don't need to bring your music with you. Nice touch.

I just downloaded Google Chrome. Firefox was fine, but I was annoyed with some stuff that was probably my fault (mostly, I had such issues downloading and viewing PDF files on my computer...it was such a pain in the ass).

Anyone got any tips on what to look for for a Google n00b?

I had that and Foxit but anytime I tried to open one up my comp would freeze up and slow down and it was just a pain. I just wanted to see how Chrome is, it seems awesome. For some reason I feel like I can see more of a webpage.

In their default configs, you can, by 5-10 vertical pixels. Firefox wastes a fair amount of vertical space, a problem which I find best remedied via hiding, shrinking, or disabling the menu bar.

edit - forgot about disabling the bookmarks toolbar - completely worthless waste of valuable space, imo, but some people like it.

I love the toolbar

I like being able to easily access all my frequent websites such as WNFF, facebook, twitter, my email, etc etc.

UMD - what do you usually use to view .pdf files? Adobe Acrobat, or Adobe Reader?

also, from what I read, this could be an issue with having multiple .pdf readers installed, if you have both Acrobat AND Reader installed on the same machine.

If you only have Reader, re-install it. when installed, it detects what Browsers you have and downloads the plugins for it. I don't know where to get those plugins, because i never needed to get them. I read .pdfs in Google Docs Viewer, most of the time. but I don't recall having many issues with Adobe Reader either.

Ummmm I'm not sure. It sounds like that was the issue, though (having multiple programs). I just tried doing some PDF stuff in Chrome and it was silky smooth. I don't really care to play around with it too much. If it becomes an issue again, though, I'll be sure to try that. Thanks.

The reason it was so frustrating is because one of my classes uses PDFs a lot to issue assignments and the Caps and Terps give their game notes in PDF format. Chrome is working nice (and I like the layout a lot more than firefox)

free = Reader

Pay = Acrobat
