Nats Announce Five International Signings
« Topic Start: August 10, 2009, 01:18:03 PM »
The Washington Nationals today announced they have agreed to terms on professional contracts with infielder Jean Valdez (16 years old), outfielder Jose Norberto (18) and right-handed pitchers Cleto Brazoban (17), Vidal Paredes (18) and George Rosa (19) from the Dominican Republic. Nationals Director of Scouting Dana Brown made the announcement.

“We are excited to add these five promising players to our player development system,” said Brown. “Valdez is the prized signing of the group. He is an exceptional hitter who projects as a potential middle-of-the-order bat with power and plate discipline. We are grateful to have the support of ownership, giving us the resources to sign international players of this caliber.”

Brown and National Crosschecker and Special Assistant to the General Manager Deric Ladnier recently scouted these players at the Rawlings Foundation Complex in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

Is Cleto Brazoban related to Yhency Brazoban?

No idea. I believe we heard his name earlier this summer, Cleto Cabral. It is likely a matter of which surname he used. The artist formerly known as Smiley Gonzalez is Carlos Alvarez Lugo but is listed as Carlos Alvarez.

I don't know, but I think Cleto is Yhency's father, not brother.

Something tells me they were probably a bit more meticulous this time in checking these player's ages.

I thought Cleto was the 6th Marx Brother.

The guys who need to be moved quickly are the 18-19 year olds. Hopefully the Nationals will get them fast tracked to the GCL whereas there is time with Valdez & Brazoban. By signing that "late" (in Latin American terms) the window on those guys is smaller

Yeah, I think they are doing bone scans or some other scientific method to corroborate age claims.

It's the age/identity verification the responsibility of the commissioner's office?

It was previously, but I'm not sure how it's being done now.  Obviously, the commissioner's office wasn't exactly getting it done.

Maybe they make the players "cross my heart and hope to die".

I believe the formula is to multiply the alleged age by 3, divide by 2 and subtract 4. That makes Valdez 20, Norberto 23, Barzoban 21.5, Paredes 23 and Rosa 24.5. SF still busted a nut.

People clamored for the Nats to be more active in int'l FA signings so that should satisfy them.

Valdez is clearly the best player of the group.  I"ve never heard of the other guys.  Valdez will likely have to move off SS though.

85 scrubs signed for 1000 dollars apiece is worthless. Brian, did they release signing bonuses?

My favorite is already Cleto "The Slack-Jawed Yokel" Brazoban.

No word on the bonuses beyond what we already had heard about Valdez ... $350-450K & Brazoban (Cabral) ... $100-200K

that's more than just a token cheap signing of a few random players.

I mean obviously these guys aren't huge signings but this is no small thing either. Good first step for the Nationals.
