i saw him a bunch of times at Potomac, I don't think he's quick enough to play CF.  He played RF in A (Eury Perez was the CF).  I think the Nats have their sights set on Goodwin or Taylor in CF unless someone falls into their lap.

Wasn't he going to play WR for Alabama? He has to be pretty quick. It hasn't translated to SB, so it's hard to tell by stats. I've read that he ran a 4.4 40

I think that I read that Hood bulked up in 2010 but worked on his conditioning more and regained his speed in 2011

I doubt Hood was ever a 4.4 guy. Every recruit claims to run one, very few do. And since he's never been considered a burner, I doubt he ever ran a legit one, no matter what is claimed. He has very good speed though.

There's something to everyone only labeling him a corner outfielder. He's definitely got the natural athleticism, and even some experience tracking a ball in the air. Maybe he doesn't get great jumps or take great routes to the ball. He is still relatively raw to the OF, since he was mostly a SS in high school.

He also does not have a cannon for an arm. I remember watching videos of him as a high school kid, and he had a funky motion, and average at best arm. Im sure his mechanics have been refined with the switch to the OF, but it hasn't uncovered a gun.

I think he's definitely a left fielder at the MLB level. I have big hopes for him though. I think he should be a 20/20 guy, and the power could be closer to 30 when all is said and done.

I could see Hunter type offensive production, maybe even a tad more power. But he definitely doesn't have the defensive value, so he won't be quite as special overall.

It'll be interesting to see if he gets off to a fast start if he gets a promotion to Syracuse. It'd be nice to see a big year from him, and push himself into contention for a spot in 2013.

2013 looks like a great opportunity if we do not land the White Whale.  If Hood looks ready, then roster construction might dictate spending the money on either another young starter (4-Aces-R-U-Kidding-Me!) or a big time MI who can lead off (cue Hammonds and Jose Reyes).

If the Nats don't have a CF'er in place by next year, any and all criticism of the FO would be warranted in my mind.

If Werth plays league average defense this year, then I could see passing on the white whale for other needs, especially if one of Goodwin or Taylor looks for realz.

What other needs exist outside of SS/CF?

1b / LF - take your pick.

If we get a CF, Werth and Harper get pushed to the corners moving Morse to first. Really the hole at CF is the same as LF; if it gets filled by Werth or Harper, LF becomes a hole, if not CF remains a hole

+1. Werth is good enough in CF, for now, and Harper will play RF. Morse to 1B if LaRoche can't hit.

If the farm-system CF's are as good as promised, wait for them rather than trade for a CF.

SS is another matter, but I think Rendon hits his way into the infield, and Desmond plays his way to the bench.

Who plays LF?

Long-term, I think Werth moves to 1B. Harper/Goodwin-Taylor/Hood would make a killer OF.

Eury Perez appears to be turning some heads at camp.

He was regarded as the CF-of-the-future going into last season. He didn't have that great of a year, but still showed tools. I hope he does great this year. I think he pans out to be a 4th/5th OF

Quote
Destin Hood, OF, Washington Nationals: Hood is a 6-1, 225 pound right-handed hitter and thrower, born April 3, 1990. A second round pick in 2008 from high school in Mobile, Alabama, Hood is a tools player who struggled with plate discipline in the low minors, but took a big step forward in '11. He hit .276/.364/.445 with 13 homers, 21 steals, and 58 walks in 463 at-bats for High-A Potomac, setting career-bests in most categories. He also dramatically improved his defense and his baserunning. Hood will move to Double-A this year and if he maintains his progress he could be a regular outfielder eventually. He was a raw athlete a year ago, but is much more of a genuine baseball player now.

After a slow start, it looks like Hood may be finally turning it around.

Today he has a double, triple (sounds like he just missed a homer), 4 RBI's (5 on season).  Average is low, but he has three extra base hits this year.

hood's average still needs improvement, but he does have 4 extra base hits (his first homer last night) and is 3rd in the Eastern League in RBIs (8)

.712 OPS over his last 10.

That's an encouraging sign that the bat is waking up.

Hood has really made strides with his defense.  Just made a really nice catch running into the wall in RF.  Game is in extras and with a runner on 1B, that may have scored him if he doesn't get to it.  Nice glove work.
