I don't necessarily disagree that college kids are a "safer" pick but even rebuilding teams need those high ceiling guys and you should always just take the best player available, college or high school. The fact that high school kids take longer isn't that important if they end up being an All-Star.
Higher chance to bust though it's not worth it. Read Moneyball's chapter about it.

I have read Moneyball's chapter on it. Multiple times, in fact.

Because his name is Destin.

FWIW, I disagree. I wouldn't consider him a top prospect at the moment, but he's still showing improvement. Hell, he already has as many walks already as he did all last season. He still needs to cut down on the Ks though.

Destin Hood's done a lot to improve his stock over the last two years, probably best of all being the switch from left to right field, where he's played all but two defensive games this year (he also DHed). He had 141 chances in RF last year and made 7 errors; this year he's had 141 chances already (in fewer games) and made not a single error.

Then of course there's his offense. His walk rate is on pace to double this year; he's on a pace for 40 doubles, more of which will become home runs as he ages and grows stronger; and he must have speed because he has 9 steals and 3 triples. He's K'ing in 22% of at-bats this year, which is rather Espinosish, but that's a part of his game he can work on. He's only just turned 21. I'd say the kid looks good but we have to remember he's still a "project", still getting fixed up and polished and has 2-3 years to do so before he gets his shot in the big leagues.

Moneyball is all about finding inefficiencies in the market.  At the time the book was written, college players were being undervalued because teams weren't accounting for the chance to bust.  Now college kids are if anything overvalued, and picking high school kids becomes a viable strategy again.  The point of the book wasn't the specific techniques used to exploit market inefficiencies and gain marginal value, it was about the philosophy behind those techniques.

Fair enough. Despite all this I would PREFER (not demand) us to pick college players, especially for pitchers.

Good article by Byron Kerr on Hood.  This guy is really starting to put everything together and should see more and more power as he gets older.  I could envision him becoming one of the top prospects in the organization in a year or two.

Let him ripen a year in AA, then a year in AAA, then 3 years of option shuttling, and that puts him in place to replace Werth.  Unless he kicks the door down earlier and Harper or Werth moves to CF or Werth to first.

it really would be fun to see him and Harper in the same OF very soon.

Still dont think Hood is ready for AA. He's still putting it together at Potomac. Let him finish up there, and build on that confidence at AA next year. If he's promoted now, and struggles, he could go back to swinging at everything and carry that approach into the off season. Maybe not - But he's one of the raw guys that you must have patience with. Don't get too excited that he's having a good year that you push him too much, and cause irreperable damage. He's not someone we need to impact the club next year, so there's no harm in him finishing the year in Potomac IMO.

I think Hood will take a while. He's 21 and in Single A

Which is fine, because I view him as Jayson Werth's replacement :D

Hes played RF most of the year. Just a few spot starts in left. I believe tonight was #9.

I tried to find season defensive stats but was unsuccessful.  What did you find, or are you just relyingon having followed the team closely, i.e. mindfacts?
