The Colorado Rockies try for rare consecutive road victories when they continue their four-game series with the Washington Nationals at RFK Stadium on Tuesday.

The Rockies won Monday's series opener 4-3, only their third victory away from Colorado in their last 11 road games.

Overall, Colorado (31-32) had lost 13 of its previous 18 games. The Rockies, though, rebounded with their first win in four contests against the Nationals (30-35).

Colorado beat San Francisco and San Diego on May 28-29, the only time since April 27-30 that it has won two straight on the road.

J.D. Closser drove in the tiebreaking run with a broken-bat single in the sixth inning Monday and Brian Fuentes recorded his 14th save, one night after blowing his second save opportunity of the season in a 6-5 loss to the Dodgers.

''I don't want to say anything about broken-bat hits, because it's not a good pitch,'' said Washington starter Ramon Ortiz , who lost for the first time since May 12. ''All the pitches the hitter hits, that's not a good pitch.''

Josh Fogg (3-4, 5.21 ERA) looks for his first career victory against the Nationals when he starts for Colorado on Tuesday. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 3.19 ERA in five starts against Washington.

Fogg has lost his last two decisions. He has one victory since April 13 and has allowed 14 earned runs in his last 15 2-3 innings.

Fogg gave up six hits and eight runs in 4 1-3 innings against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, but didn't factor in the decision in Colorado's 16-9 victory.

The Nationals had won nine of their last 11 and were within four games of .500 before losing Monday night.

Washington had won four of its past five home games, but lost despite a homer from Jose Guillen , who has four RBIs in two games since returning from a stint on the DL because of a left hamstring strain.

Guillen has had plenty of success against Fogg, with three homers and five RBIs in 13 at-bats. Overall, Guillen is batting .538 (7-for-13) against Fogg.

Alfonso Soriano went 0-for-4 on Monday and is 2-for-17 in his last four games. Soriano leads the Nationals with 23 homers and 47 RBIs.

Mike O'Connor (3-3, 3.04) looks for consecutive wins when he starts for Washington on Tuesday. The rookie left-hander beat Philadelphia 5-2 on Thursday for his first victory in more than a month, allowing three hits and two runs - one earned - in six innings.

O'Connor has allowed fewer than four runs in all nine of his major league starts.

''One thing about the kid, he seems to do what he has to do to keep you in the ballgame and hang around,'' Nationals manager Frank Robinson said. ''You'd think the way he pitched, he'd be behind or he'd have six or seven base hits up there, but you look up, it's the sixth inning and he's given up three hits. He was effective, but it wasn't pretty.''

This will be O'Connor's first start against the Rockies.

This is as close to a must win as the 2nd game of a 4 game set, in the middle of June, against a non-NL East team, can get.  8)

I completely agree.  We have to win this one to atleast ensure a split of this series.  I still think we can take this series though.  Fogg, Kim, and Jennings are beatable.

I hope O'Connor gets the same strikes that Fogg got.  This umpire has a hugeeeeee strike zone.

Does it have a button on the pedestal that makes his eyes light up red and smoke come out of his ears?

Does anyone know if Mike Vento is really up?  He's been listed on the bench on GameCenter at sportsline.com, for two days in a row.

There has been no announcement of a move.  Sportsline.com probably just haven't updated their roster lately.

He is not on the official active roster on MLB.com...which is supposed to be updated daily.
