In order to delay free agency, a team needs only to hold out a player for 11 days.

The regular season is 183 days, but the rules that govern free agency/arbitration have a full season defined as 172.

This doesn't consider the Super 2 exception, which is more of a guessing game.

yeah call up bernadina who is batting a BLISTERING .167 IN AAA-SYRACUSE.
Yeah, this is a bit baffling to me too. For all the crap we throw at Milledge, I'm sure most would agree his bat's much better than Bernadina's. But defensively, no. That's the only reason I can see for this move.

:? 18 freaking ABs

He's also walked 4 times already and has stolen 1 base. Acta is a big fan of his so I wouldn't be surprised if they called him up.

Roger is a better hitter than Milledge at this point, no doubt. I look forward to watching him up here again.

I don't see why he would, that has never been the plan.  He will pitch the 19th or later...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

holy crap you so set yourself up for this one it's not even funny.  MILLEDGE HAD 24 at bats and you blast him and everyone else on the team except for nieves/zimmerman/flores/lannan - but hey it's only second week of the season for them and bernadina so they'll get it turned around - everyone else is freakED!  you can never be consistent can you.

Maxwell's a different story. I think the team's longterm hopes for him are still pretty high and they don't want to mess with his development. Bernadina is what he is though -- a speedy outfielder with a great glove and a crap bat -- so they really aren't worried about screwing anything up.

are you freaking serious?  with the glove yes, no question.  milledge is a better hitter than bernadina and look at last year's major league numbers - hell look at their numbers in the minors.

Bernadina has nothing to turn around. He's fine. Hopefully he will bring a wave of energy to this team of deadbeats.

Mills was a lost cause up here and even his butt buddy Acta had to come to terms with that.

crap bat. that's laughable. i'm not even going to post his numbers from last year again. you can look for yourself. His bat is far from crap. He gets a bad rap because he is not a big guy and people think he is a speedy no-hitting defensive specialist which is far from the truth.

Honestly, I fail to see how sportsfan can criticize AZ.

a lost cause?  the dude is 23.  you've gone beyond :az: with your hatred for some and your love for others, it's kinda annoying.

he was a lost cause up here right now at this point in time. not saying he will be forever. there was nothing he could do to turn it around now while we are losing game after game.

I don't get it. You defend Milledge but even his biggest supporters in the Nationals' organization think lowly of him and this demotion speaks volumes.

Worrying about free agency for this team is like the little Dutch Boy worrying where to plug the dike four years from now. It make no sense if the dike is overflowing today.

Jesus, man. I hope you're kidding here. I remember sitting at the park for his first MLB at-bat where he got a hit and ended up scoring. That was it though. He was an automatic out after that! He had 4 hits total over the next two weeks. In September, he had two decent games -- his only ones for the year. Yes, his glove is outstanding to watch, but don't bother defending his bat.

Bernadina has shortened his swing a lot last year and became a different batter as a result.  I think he will be much more successful in what will be his third time up here.  His .306/.444/.389 line from his second stint was much better than his .125/.125/.125 line from his first.  If he can take walks like he was doing in September, then he might actually be a decent player to have on the 25 man roster.

I wouldn't mind Maxwell, I would rather have him get some everyday time down at AAA, though, since he missed so much time last year.

bernadina career minor league numbers - .265 avg/.349 obp/.384 slg/47 HR/119 2B/180 SB/323 BB/573 K in 738 games/3,034 plate appearances.  nothing other than his speed and his glove stand out.  as i said i think he could be a serviceable 5th outfielder one day - but hey that .167 clip is really impressive.

It's pretty tough to call Bernadina a better hitter after like 3 weeks worth of ABs.

yep, the front office was very impressed with the way he shortened his swing and played this Spring.

for the life of me I'll never understand why people group him in the same category with the likes of Nook Logan and Brandon Watson. what a joke.

i'm not talking about long term. I'm talking NOW. At this point in time Bernadina gives us a better chance at the dish then Milledge would. things can change quickly but right now that's how it is.

I'm not closing the freaking book on him.  He has things to work on and I've admitted it.  As someone wrote on NJ today, Mickey Mantle was sent down to the minors and then looked how he turned out.  Not saying Milledge will ever be MM, but give up on him at age of 23.  I've explained myself a million times before on this subject and have a tough time getting through to you.

The point is replacing Bernadina for Milledge won't help us win games, it would be a freaking terrible move.

i won't because it's like talking to a wall with the people on here. this is silly anyways. i can't wait until he's up here so his numbers can speak for themselves.
