( April 8 ) Miami - A day after a sloppy Opening Day 12-6 loss, the Nationals took exception to their sluggish play and thwarted the Marlins 17-2. Adam Dunn continued where he left off on Monday, going 3-for-4 with a mammoth 3-run homer, a 2-run double, a walk and a strike out, leading the Nationals to one of their best all around games since coming to Washington D.C.
"We earned this one today," manager Manny Acta said. "A lot of pundits and fans have written us off after one game, but we weren't ready to throw in the towel. We know it's a long season."
The Nationals hope starter Scott Olsen can pitch more like he did last night in the rest of the season. The left-hander, acquired in the offseason from the Marlins, pitched 8 scoreless innings, only giving up three hits and striking out six. Emilio Bonifacio, who came over in that same deal from the Nationals, came back down to reality by going 0-for-4 and committing two errors at the hot corner.
Every starting position player on the Nationals recorded at least one hit, with Elijah Dukes and Josh Willingham (also included in the deal) contributing off the bench. Even Roger Bernadina had a solid night with Washington's AAA farm club, Syracuse, keeping poster Sportsfan882 happy.
The only player who didn't have a smile on his face in the clubhouse was Julian Tavarez who gave up the two lone Marlins runs. At the time this story was printed, it is unknown as to whether Jason Bergmann will be called up to replace Tavarez.
