He's a corner outfielder, if he is good enough to start then he should be good enough to hit in a run poducing spot.

OPENING DAY = OPTIMISM

TODAY IS THE DAY THE NATS BEGIN THEIR QUEST TO GO FROM WORST TO FIRST!

last year, playing the Fish wasn't fun. they owned us. it's time for Zimmerman and co. to return the favor.

LETS GO LANNAN!

*i feel sorry for all of the opening day games that already got postponed- it's suppose to be 85 and sunny in Miami!

Batting him behind Johnson makes the end of the line up more vulnerable IMO. The idea of breaking up the hitters is to force the other teams pitchers to have to throw to new spots.

it doesn't matter where you bat Kearns- he's going to kill the lineup regardless. however, i'm confident the rest of the team will be able to overcome his trademark weak grounders and pop outs.

or you could be like the phillies and line up as many lefties as possible

You have to wonder how that's going to play out. I think they would be better off with Victorino batting 2nd, Werth 5th and Ibanez 6th.

When your top two OBP players are batting 4th and 5th, 6th is THE run producing spot in the lineup.

Johnson hits lefties just as well as righties.  Anyway, I'm skeptical of this "new spots" theory.  It seems to me, that the primary purpose of alternating left handed/right handed batters is to prevent the opposing manager from getting favorable lefty / righty matchups without burning through a new pitcher per batter.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict an awful game for EB. No way he can hit Lannan's stuff. Actually, look how crappy the top of the lineup is - Maybin hasn't hit in the majors.

No, I don't believe in jinxes.

Manny is obsessed with this crap. I'm getting awfully tired of Manny. He's as superstitious, stubborn, favoritism driven, and pigheaded as FR was.

That would be a good avatar, if I didn't respect FR so much as a human being and a player. But boy did he manage poorly.

Well look who sobered up. Don't you hate it when the courthouses are closed on Sundays? Anyway, Johnson isn't the problem, it's Kearns followed by Belliard. Both are susceptible to high inside pitchers why give the opposing pitcher a chance to dial that pitch in back to back hitters? If by "new zone" do you mean in the last 80 years? But it has been used by managers as far back as John McGraw's days. The idea has always been to make a pitcher have to throw strikes with as many of his pitches as possible. Maybe it's a new term but the idea of not having players with the same hitting zone in back to back positions has been around forever.

Yeah, I might have switched Belliard and Dunn around personally...I trust Ronnie more in RBI situations than Kearns...
