18 Errors in the field.

He won't hit enough to be a corner outfielder. He's capable of hitting .280-.300 and 15-20 HRs.

But you never know. RZ wasn't a power hitter either in College. Neither was Danny Espinosa and he is cranking bombs for Potomac this season.

It's just a change of approach. I've always thought that if a guy is capable of hitting 10, he could hit 20+.

Wasn't Green POY in the Cape league?  He's supposed to be able to stick in the middle infield.  Since Espinosa is supposed to be able to sitck at SS, I'll take a 2d baseman.

Much like in the NFL you draft tackles because if they can't make it at tackle, they can move to guard and be decent players.   See Gallery, Robert of the Raiders.

You don't draft 2nd basemen highly in the draft.  Why?  Because a SS who may not have the range to play SS in the majors can move to 2nd.  But a 2nd who is a bust at 2nd, is basically screwed.

And please don't give me the BS about Pedrioa.  I'll list at least five players drafted as 2nd, who were busts.

Brett Boone,Mike Lowell,Chase Utley,Nate McLouth & Russell Martin were drafted as 2B. Sometimes you have to look at why a player is playing the position also. Like Ryan Zimmerman in high school.

As long as they take a decent bat, I'll be happy.

I don't know that there will be any available at that point.  I think the best players that will be available will be pitchers.

I've seen some projections that have some highschool guys there, especially 1b types.

for instance, Bochering, who I would take in a heart beat in http://www.mlbdraftsite.com/ http://www.mlbdraftsite.com/ and http://morisato.realsportsbloggers.com/2008/11/13/2009-mlb-draft-projections-version-10/ (the three top google hits for mock draft)

Mostly agree.  But Pedroia and Kinsler were college SS. Pedroia I believe was switched in part because of Hanley Ramirez.  I don't think people are saying Green can't play SS.  It looks like at BA they still have him as the 2d or 3d best bat, behind Ackley but around Tate.  John Manuel seems to think that the biggest reason he may drop out of the top 5 is signability and not ability.  Callis says that people had too high expectations for him after the Cape League, that he is not Longoria and less than Tulo.

I know that the Nationals are going (almost have) to take Strasburg with the #1 overall pick, but there is still a part of me that is trying to reconcile this equation

Strasburg + Signability Pitcher

versus

Ackley + Best Player Available (likely a pitcher)

Which is the better choice?

I know people are going to argue the signability pick with Strasburg (I don't buy Rizzo's assertion that signability is not going to play a role 100%) but given the lack of a safety net with that pick, the best player available seems unlikely to be the choice at #10.

To me Strasburg alone >>>>> Ackley and any other player.  You have a chance to get a guy who could end up being the best ever at his position.  You don't pass that up.

What would be the fall out from selecting Ackley over Strasburg?

That's the thing. They have to take Strasburg. The PR fallout would be off the charts if they passed.

Listen, I still believe it's always best player available. Strasburg is the best player available at #1. It's the added wrinkle of the next pick coming up soon quickly without a safety net.

If the Nats were selecting #1 and then not again until #50, pick Strasburg and move on. It's the high pick coming up so soon that gives me pause.

I would hope the Nats are smart enough to understand they are going to have to pay above slot to sign #10.

He got all the hype because of that, but this season has been a disappointment. I would rather take my chances on another guy because it's likely Green will have to move to another position.

Chances are he was pitched around quite a bit this year and when he was pitched to didn't see much to hit.  He'd still be an excellent pick if he's available.

Notice I didn't say you don't draft 2B, I said you don't draft them with high draft picks.

The thread topic is the the 10th overall pick, correct?

Boone was a 5th rounder.  High since baseball has 50 rounds, more when Boone was drafted.

But Ty Griffin, Mike Fonenot, and were college 2B and drafted in the 1st round, they were busts.

fontenot is a starter and a career .276 hitter... i wouldnt call him a bust.
