In the end, it boils down to "Do you think Coste is better than Nieves or Bard?".

He was released - Astros sent him to AAA. We really want to trade Bard - it's a no brainer.

BJ Ryan released today.  $15 m left on his contract. Once he clears waivers, roll the dice?

The Cubs signed him today.

Sign him - why the hell not

Actually, it might be fun to have him and Julian throw in one game, just to look at their motions.

Tyler Walker.  Phils just DFA'd him.  He's better than Tavarez.  Per rotoworld:

Quote
Phillies designated RHP Tyler Walker for assignment.

Signed to a minor league contract in early April, Walker had a 1.40 ERA and 20/3 K/BB ratio in 19 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level before earning a promotion to the bigs on June 14. He allowed just two earned runs in 11 innings with the Phillies while compiling a 5/1 K/BB ratio, but the club obviously saw something in the right-hander that they didn't like. He's sure to find a home elsewhere.

You don't think the Phillies retread is better than our retread?

I'd grab him and release Tavarez now.

Even you could throw more strikes than Tavarez - what do we have to lose. How about cutting Guzman, taking Lugo from the Sox plus a solid reliever for a fringe prospect?

Why get rid of 1 over the hill bum for another?

Waste. Walker sucks. Couldn't even keep a job with the Giants.

Haven't we learned our lesson going after retreads like Tavarez, Kensing, Beimel, Villone, etc?

:bang:

You have any better ideas?  Trying something is better than trying nothing.  Even if the result is the same, you're no worse off.

In Sportsfan's world, if you are over 25, and/or have Major League Experience with a team other than the Nationals, you are a worthless retread.

Walker, 33, has only pitched 11 innings for the Phillies this year, but he's done well, allowing ten hits and a walk to go along with five Ks and a 1.64 ERA.

WTF?  His performance has been good this year.  You don't think that makes him more worthwhile than some of those other guys?

Lot's of semi interesting names DFA'd today.  Kotsay, Roy Corcoran, Josh Anderson, David Delluci.  If we did a trade with the Tigers involving one of the Nick Dunn Willingham triumvirate, Anderson might be a useful  back up outfielder as part of a larger package.  I also think Corcoran has had some success, and if we moved Guz to Seattle, he also might be worth takign aback as a throw in.

we've had Corcoran before. Minor league trash.

in fact all of the players you listed are.

we need to get younger, not older. we have enough has-beens as it is.

Anderson isn't quite 27, has a good glove, is an excellent base stealer percentage-wise.  His OBP isn't quite good enough to be a regular, and has no power.  Looks like a 4th OF, but was squeezed out of Detroit due to the return of Carlos Guillen.  If we did move Willie, I would not mind him here.  He's only a year older than Justin Maxwell.  I'd rather have him up than Maxwell if it means Maxwell does not play regularly.

The nature of most of these cuts that are on this thread is that they're bench depth with a few skills. Just about the best you can hope for is a Willie Harris who develops late.  Anderson has some useful skills and could be an adequate 4th OF. Nothing more.

According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Mariners have designated outfielder Wladimir Balentien for assignment. He's bumped to make room for Michael Saunders.

The move is somewhat interesting, as the Mariners had once considered the powerful Balentien the future of their outfield when Adam Jones departed to the Orioles in the Erik Bedard trade. The 25-year-old Balentien has been disappointing, though, posting a .619 OPS in 434 plate appearances the last three seasons.

Last year he was considered the Mariners top 5 prospect and now look at him.

I'd definitely go after Balentein.

He's more of an OF prospect than anything we have in the system.

For comparison... career minor league numbers

Roger Bernadina - 24 years old (born June 12, 1984)
.265/.351/.383/.734 with 47 HR's and 310 RBI's - 2600+ at bats

Wladimir Balentien - 24 years old (born July 2, 1984)
.273/.345/.526/.871 with 122 HR's and 417 RBI's - 2100+ at bats

So Balentien in 500 less at bats has put up 75 more home runs and 107 more RBI's. Seems pretty easy to see who should be getting the boot to bring Balentien in.

 amen linty.

Balentein > Bernadina and it's not even close.
