Just a small problem with that rant - don't most trout streams require you to catch-and-release now? Oh the huge manatee think of the Lexus!!?!!/11/1!1;osal;oz
There are basically only about 4 types of trout streams.
1-Private waters where the trout are huge, sluggish, grain fed and may be kept depending on the rules of the owner. You pay a stiff fee to fish these.
2-Catch and release only public streams, one of the best known is the Rapidan (read: Flyfishing through the midlife crisis by Howell Raines)
3-Put and take - Where "fishermen" follow the stocking trucks around (made easier via twitter) and set about snagging their limits moments after the stunned fish are dumped into waters that may, or may not, even be able to support fish year round. Example: Accotink Creek.
4-Others - generally streams that would support trout except that they are not subject to catch and release regs, therefore they make a few nice dinners before the population dwindles to a few undersize ones who are barely able to spawn once before being culled.
Anyway, flyfishing is not synonomous with trout fishing. Most of my flyfishing is for bass (smallmouth, typically) or saltwater like for red drum, which is awesome sport.
