Marlins Spending Spree
« Topic Start: February 16, 2012, 03:23:08 PM »
I just decided to look at some of the details of the Marlins $191M spending spree this past winter - for Reyes, Bell and Buehrle.

Out of the $191M committed, $7M is in bonuses that are being deferred without interest, and the 2012 salaries represent only $22M of that.

Reyes - 6 yrs, $106M, $10M in 2012
Buehrle - 4 yrs, $58M, $4M deferred bonus, $6M in 2012
Bell- 3 yrs, $27M, $3M deferred bonus, $6M in 2012

they are going to sell them all off in 2-3 years.  There is a reason they don't give no-trades

And if they get a third ring no one will care.

good luck finding takers- they were the high bidders this year and in 2-3 years, the players will all be older and have higher AAVs

The only one of the three I see them having a problem trading will be Bell, who had already begun his decline when he was signed by the Fish.

no one else else was willing to match the marlins at 6/106 on a 28 year old reyes reyes, in two years, is he really more valuable at 4/86 with a 22 million option that may have to be picked up for him to waive his no trade clause?

No one was willing to match... or no one was given a chance?

The Marlins met with him at 12:01 a.m. and bombarded him with an offer the opening night of FA.

I'm sure you could find some way to move him... either by eating a portion of the contract or sending along a prospect or two like they always seem to develop.

If no one was given a shot and he really wanted to be in Miami, why would he waive his no trade clause?

I don't know. Maybe if he sees the team falling apart, he'd like to move to a winner?

Reyes may be the type of player the Marlins want to hold on to, regardless of contract, because, like Pujols, they believe he can bring in the latino market.

What about in January 2014, when Mark Buehrle is owed $19 million for '14 (age 35) and $20 million for '15 (age 36)?

It could be worse, they could have Jayson Werth at age 38 at $21m to look forward to. :stir:

And what talent will they need to add to make that conceivable?  Other than Reyes, they treaded water.

If pitchers generally do not make it back effectively from shoulder surgery, then the Nats would be get less out of their Wang, and the Fish would get less out of their Johnson.  Who is hurt more?

It doesn't matter. The Red Sox are going to win the next 7 world series anyway.

Marlins don't give no trade clauses as a general rule, pretty sure Reyes didn't get one. Bell and Buehrle neither.
