I don't trust a list with Hanrahan third

Why, the GasCanrahan had been a true stud the past two years and this isn't based on the Fangraphs over thinking crowd.

The formula is heavily influenced by win and save totals. It isn't meant to be used to measure a pitchers value but to predict the Cy-Young winner.

unless they're gange good, there is no reason to include closers

Right, again not geared towards the value group.

Last night Gio was our no. 1 starter.  The night before, Jordan was our no. 1 starter.  On Sunday, Detwiler was our no. 1 starter.  Today Strasburg will regain the title - no. 1 starter.  Jackson's no. 2. :mg:

These guys are just doing work like you wouldn't believe. I hope Strasburg throws a perfect game against the Mutts today.

He has every impetus since being called out by DJ.

When did a closer last win the Cy Young award?

When did a closer last win the Cy Young award?

Eric Gagne (2003).

The fact that closers are on that list is lol-worthy but it HAS been scary good at predicting the Cy Young winners in the past.

Gagne in 2003. That was a sick season. 0.69 WHIP.

Chapman should be on that list. Reds need to use him like Gagne

Kirk Radomski is out of business so good luck on that.

No one "should" be on that list if the list is based on a historic formula and he does not do well on that formula.  They aren't going to fix the formula so that someone who does not score in the top 10 appears in the top 10.

JZ, by the way, would score:

[(5*128.333 IP)/9 - 33 ER] + (90 K/12) + 0 SV + 0 SHO + [(7W*6) - (6L*2)] + 8 "Victory Bonus" = 83.8

He's hurt by his won - loss and his lack of Ks.  If he were 10 - 3 instead of 7 - 6, he'd have 24 more points and be just ahead of Cain.  If he were an 8 K/9 guy, he'd have 2 more points.

Cueto would deserve it if the season ended right now.  A 2.23 ERA in that park?

Dropout saves (unless you really think 9 winners in the history of the award really merits their inclusion) and maybe he makes it on the list.

I have no idea why any of you wouldn't look at that list and be thrilled that a guy with a 0.00% chance of winning the Cy Young is ahead of Gio.

Milone has thrived at home at the Coliseum, so much so that he has a 5-2 record and 1.51 ERA at home, but 5.77 ERA and 4-6 record on the road.

Bump for a fangraphs article analyzing his season.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/examining-gio-gonzalez/

The author notes he that he relief on his fastballs more this year to get ahead, rather than starting hitter 30% of the time with the curve.  By throwing the curve less frequently, and saving it more for when he was ahead in the count, he improved his K rate and decreased his walk rate to Kershaw's 2010 rates.

Better than 3Rd place for Cy Young!  I guess playing for the best team in the league; most wins in the league, while pitching fewer innings; and on a team that was in the playoffs means squat!  >:(
