I just started up SOE's new Casual MMO called Free Realms.
graphically it looks pretty much like WoW, only without the oversized feet and hands and popeye forearms. It has a kinda cutesy, cartoony look to it.
but it's a really casual MMO, i mean REALLY casual. it is meant to be a "family" game, as it was stated. something Kid-friendly, but that Adults can also enjoy. SOE has been stated to envision Adults playing Free Realms with their children.
and it has a bunch of different things you can do(like playing Soccer, racing cars, demolition derby, a Trading Card Game and sh*t like that) and lots of minigames in it(even has Checkers, Chess, and a form of Tower Defense).
It's free to download and play on a limited basis(you can play each "Job" up to level 5), with a $5 a month membership fee that unlocks everything in the game. You launch it from your Browser, and the 2GB of game data is streamed to your computer in chunks(kinda like Guild Wars), there is no "client download" apart from the initial 65mb download to get started.
so far, it isn't too bad. it's got a really, really heavyhanded chat filter, but beyond that I haven't found any major gripes yet in the 2 days I've been playing.
the combat isn't very hard, and it is mostly instanced. If you've played a FF style RPG, you know how when you run up to an enemy on the world Map, the game opens a "Field" that your party fights on against a group of enemies, and then when the battle is over, you are returned to the world map? Combat in Free Realms is kinda like that, only real-time and not turn-based). You click on the enemy you want to fight, and you are sent to a VERY LARGE instanced field filled with groups of enemies, and then you fight until they are all gone. and then you are transported out of the instanced field.
It's not a hardcore MMO by any means at all and it is generally easy combat-wise, but it's still pretty fun for the most part, and there is quite a variety of activities in the game. I'm sticking with the Combat for now, but the Card Game is pretty fun, as is the Soccer.
also, it works pretty well on Wireless Mobile Broadband, although at times you may encounter a lengthy data download due to the reduced speed of Wireless Mobile Broadband compared to regular cable modem.
