Because it was Star Wars getting all the attention and in the Dork Wars, Star Wars and Star Trek have always had the larger followings.

:nono: Watch it.  Watch who you're calling a dork!  >:(

I like both shows but do not consider myself a Dork.  There are extremist fans and not so extremist.  I don't dress up, but I am a fan of both shows.

For all the success that Star Trek has had, I think I know one person, an old coworker who watched Star Trek. I dont get it. It is apparently popular enough to be on for like 40 years and I dont know anyone who watches it

There is something nostalgic about the Captain Kirk days.

I got into it when I was a kid.  Space Travel etc was interesting to me.

So now you do!

not that i am questioning fans' taste, just that for as successful as it is, i can't find anyone who watches it

Nothing beats Conan O'Brien's skit back when Star Wars Episode 1 came out.  He had some guy dress up as Spock and took him to one of those late night showings of Episode 1 where everyone was outside waiting in line and all dressed up.

Conan had Spock walk down the line with his middle finger up.  Hilarious!

There was a great skit on SNL with Bill Shatner where he told attendees at a Trekkie Convention to "Get a Life!" My siblings and I thought Captain Kirk was a hoot, especially during each episode's obligatory romance scene. We'd yell "Captain Kirk!" and assume the junior high school boy's pretend makeout pose.  High humor for grammar school kids.

Kirk *was* a hoot. Shatner seems to have a good sense of humor about the whole thing, too.

Captain Kirk was a hoot,

Kirk *was* a hoot.

Is being a *hoot* negative or positive?

That depends on the perspective of the "hootie," I would think.

From my perspective, I can always use a good laugh, so I think that somebody being a "hoot" is a positive thing, whether the person in question is someone else or me. ;) Others, however, might not think of being a hoot as a positive thing, particularly if the humor is unintentional.

I usually interpret hoot as funny.  However, someone might not like that you find them funny at times when they arent trying to be funny.

Right, that's what I was trying to convey.

Once I baby sat a 5 year old kid.  He was watching Star Trek on TV.  Kirk was in one of his horrible spots where it didn't look like he was going to get out of it this time.  Since I had seen it before, I knew he would.

Anyhow the kid I was sitting was getting upset:

Him - Oh, no Kirk's going to die!

Me - No he wont, he'll get out of it, he always does.

Him - I don't know, it looks pretty bad

Me - Don't worry, it will be ok

Him - How do you know?!

Me - Because its on again tomorrow night.  If he couldn't get out of it, would it be on again tomorrow night?!

Him - Are you sure?

Me - (taking the program and showing him its on again) Yeah I'm sure.

Him - (Much relieved)  Good!   :)

Sometimes a little reality is a good thing!   :icon_mrgreen:

I don't know about that, you kind of ruined the suspense for that episode for the kid   I would've argued that the following night's episode could've had someone else in charge of the Enterprise.

This kid was truly scared!  He was only 5.  He enjoyed watching to see how Kirk got out of it.  It was in repeats back then.  It was on every weeknight between 5pm and 6pm or something like that.  He truly was relieved that Kirk would survive!
