Gameday Thread: Nationals @ Mets, Game 3
« Topic Start: August 21, 2005, 12:37:00 PM »
Game Time: 1:10 PM

Esteban Loaiza, RHP (7-9, 3.64)
Right-hander Esteban Loaiza will get the start for the Nationals. He will pitch on three days of rest. The last time a Nationals/Expos starting pitcher pitched on short rest was on June 1, 2003, when Livan Hernandez pitched on three days against the Phillies. The Expos lost the game, 4-3. The last time Loaiza pitched on three days of rest was on Sept. 29, 2003, when he was with the White Sox.

Kris Benson, RHP (9-4, 3.49)
Benson comes into Sunday's start on a roll, having won his last two outings against San Diego and Pittsburgh and pitching about as well as he has for New York. Benson has spoken often about feeling like a totally different pitcher this season and it's shown, as he's soaked up lessons from the Mets' staff with vigor. Benson allowed two runs and seven hits in a no-decision against the Nationals on July 7.

Getting a win here doesn't help much.  There is a gaping wound in the chest of our season.  All a win in this game does is sop up a few drops of the blood.

no.

we are saying that this particular individual game is not as CRUCIAL as having a VERY GOOD homestand this week is.

we NEED to sweep the Reds, and take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals.

the grounds crew watered down the infield too much, and they were putting quick-dry on the field.

No, we're not done.  What I am saying is that this team has shown a disturbing tendancy for not winning close games and for not taking of opportunities that present themselves.

A win here certainly would be a good thing but these two losses have been so devastating for our playoff chances,  Just losing to an NL East team would have been bad but losing to an NL East team, in light of all of the teams in contention that have also lost, is what has produced the gaping wound.

Being 1 1/2 games out of the wildcard isn't bad.  We're in contention with a lot of other teams that, I think, feel more a sense of urgency than we do.
