Right.  The roads are completely jammed with excess traffic under normal dry conditions.  Add snow to already frigid pavement, and you have the ingredients for a long drive home.

Thankfully I'm an independent contractor who only takes work when I feel like it and a grad student online.  I'm not going anywhere unless I have to in this mess.

This snow thing has turned out to be a real disappointment.  Of course it's not really the snow's fault, most places announced closings pre-emptively last night or this morning, but noooo not where I work :?

Hmm.  There's some white crap all over the ground.  It can't be snow because the weather forecasts weren't calling for any here :?

Wouldn't more fresh water result in a smaller concentration of salt, meaning the colligative properties change? aka i believe the water would be susceptible to change in temperature based on the same change in heat.

i think they go over this in the al gore movie.  as the warm water moves up from the south and cools, it becomes more dense and sinks. this helps keep the warm water flowing up from the south as it cycles. if you add fresh water it affects makes the salt water less salty and dense and it doesnt sink and the cycle slows down or stops the flow of warm water coming up from the south. i think it went something like that

It goes exactly like that. At least in theory.

It snowed a couple of inches here in Manassas.  Had an unscheduled leave afternoon, so I left work early.  Wish it was Friday.

About 20 inches in the greater Montreal area so far this winter. Rink in the backyard is almost up, couple more waterings and it'll be good to skate on.  :mg:

So...the forecast essentially says no snow but there's a fairly large batch or two in the Waynesboro to Charlottesville area that looks like it's tracking right for us.  What the deuce?

According to the radar, it should be snowing right now. The reason they didn't call for any is because they know the air is too dry for it to have even a remote chance of making the ground. 69% humidity with a decent amount of precipitation over head right this second.

it looks like we might get a Christmas snow.  Oh, and there's a lunar eclipse around 3:00 AM tomorrow if you can pull yourself away from bed for a few minutes.

AFAIK they do, or maybe it's at 6th and I, but we have our own little matzo ball to take care of.

I guess we should count our blessings, in the Sierra Nevada's they've had more than 13' of snow in some parts and 100 MPH winds.

check out this picture from the Capital Weather Gang:

some of the models are now converging on a big storm hitting either in D.C. or just north of D.C., probably late Sat. into Sunday.
