I was roaming around outside work one day and ran into a fellow vet (Desert Storm guy) having a smoke.    He didn't know I was approaching him.   As I came up to him, I heard him reciting the "military alphabet".    He got to "lima" and I said "mike".   I guess I caught him in a private moment but when he heard my follow-up and saw it was me, we had a back slapping laugh.   Over the years, I'd walk past his desk and give him a subtle shout out  ...   one day it would be "zulu"  ..   another it could be "kilo".   But everyday it was an acknowledgement and we knew what it meant.

There's gonna be a new "combat" medal for drone operators which will rank higher than the Bronze Star with Combat V.  If you don't know what that is, google it.  This blows my mind..

Those folks need incentives just like anyone does, but a combat medal seems a bit of a stretch.  $ bonus seems a better fit.

Or maybe a letter, or a pat on the back.  There's no valor involved, and no risk to his/her own life.  I give the DoD a #fail for this one.

Agreed.  Still, while no courage required, the roles are becoming an ever more critically important component of our military arsenal, and in the past they've received scant notice.  Maybe the pendulum is swinging too far this time, but recognition is appropriate.

That's what achievement medals are for.

Motherfreaker. I can't get my goddamn CAR approved for my last deployment, but some Chair Force commando gets a medal for freaking sitting in his chair, eating fast food, and playing a damn video game!?!?!?!?

Valor, like pregnancy, doesn't come in different levels. The whole system of having different levels of valor is retarded from the onset.

which is fine, but exposure to actual danger seems like a prerequisite

I've been out of the Army about 42 years..   I know things have changed.   However, I simply can't figure the rationale for this.   Even my inclination to be a smart ass on the subject is numbed.   The techies have taken over the Defense Department.   In a way I hope Hagel gets confirmed and as an old decorated grunt the first thing he says is, "WTF is this is bullcrap gentlemen?"    More than anything, it is disrespectful to the people who do the face to face.
