Unfortunately, we are the worst team in baseball (again).  We are only 9.5 games out of the first pick in 2011 draft.

That we started 20-15

We went 18-18 from July 25th to August 31st last year.

and have Stephen Strasburg.

Who is 2-1 in 4 starts.  We have so much farther to go than people wanted to admit when this team was playing over it's head for the first six weeks.

Wait just a cotton pickin' minute Chief !  We were winning the close games the first 6 weeks and we've lost the close games the last 4 weeks.  But all the games are close.  That is so much better than last year.

We're 12-15 (.444) in one-run games and 5-10 (.333) in blowouts.  Last year we were 22-24 (.478) in one-run games and 14-29 (.326) in blowouts.

I get what you're saying, but "almost" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

As the blood bath continued up in Baltimore Kasten was selling Strasburg t-shirts down in Atlanta:

Quote
Kasten: His role as a symbol is very important. When we came in four years ago, we talked about wanting to build through scouting/development with an emphasis on pitching. Continuing with the fulfillment of that commitment, I think it's very important that fans could see that we are close to turning the corner. We are close to having a really terrific, good, stable young rotation as some of our guys come up from the Minor Leagues and come back from rehab. But clearly the symbol of that movement is Stephen.

Didn't the rays and royals do it recently. I seem to remember the price and beckham drafts to be in back to back years

After looking at the first overall picks I am confused by 2004. How did the padres end up with the first pick when the tigers lost 119?

They use to alternate between AL and NL for worst record/first pick

Nope.

If you go to the 'Gameday Thread' menu, you will see no more than 3 in a row.    :'(

So having the first pick in the draft two years in a row and a team having the worst record in baseball more than one year in a row aren't the same thing. So, really that statement means nothing about only two teams having done it since it was obviously after the '04 season that it stopped alternating. It is also a good thing the Padres screwed up the '04 draft so bad because I can imagine Tigers fans being pissed they didn't have the first pick.
