Charlie and Dave said that that is usually not a swing, but that interpretation of a check swing always varies from one ump to another.

There's no rule about a checked swing. It comes down to whether the guy attempted to hit the ball, not how far he goes. That was close, but he did check up in a way that indicated he was backing off from it. We've been screwed on much more obvious attempts than that. These umps need to call that both ways.
