BA's Jim Callis appears to be a fan of Hultzen. A couple Hultzen related questions:

Dylan Bundy, HS RHP from Owasso HS (OK), struck out 17 batters in 7 innings last night including the first 10 he faced.  He has a pretty strong commitment to Texas, but may be worth a look as an overslot guy with one of the later picks.  There is a lot to like about the guy.  He already hits 93 with his fastball, has good sink, and has an excellent curveball.  Real smooth delivery as well.

Hopefully he's fat.

Would love to have a King Kong Bundy in the system.

Nice.

Quote
Jeff Sullivan (Belchertown MA): Who is the second best pitcher in the draft?

Jim Callis: Great question. Best pure pitcher, I'd say Danny Hultzen. Best pitching prospect, I'm torn between Hultzen and Gray and I'm probably not giving enough credit to the high school crop.

Have you seen Todd Coffey?

Notice his legs do an inverted W, he's ripe for a groin pull.

His real problem is the "capital L" flaw seen in that picture. Leading biomechanical experts agree that contributes to late night Big Mac runs at an alarming rate.

I think his problems are the double D's you can see in that picture.

Rawlings needs to make the manzier for huskier pitchers, the yankees alone could buy enough to make it profitable

Some notes on potential draft picks.  Jungmann and JBJ stand out in this writeup.

Leading to the dreaded "Backwards C" position of his midsection

New mock draft has us taking Danny Hultzen(as I predicted along time ago) and passing on Matt Purke.  http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Mock-Draft-2011

Didnt they have us taking Bubba Starling in their last one?

And they have us passing on Trevor Bauer at 23(and Anderson, Beede, and Owens) for a college catcher, when we are looking very good with Ramos and Norris at the spot. Not saying we wont grab a catcher but it doesn't make sense in the first round and I think we'd go the HS route later to get some true youth in the system at the spot. I understand the point of BPA, but Susac isnt BPA IMO. Not BPA and not a positional need.

I wouldnt mind Hultzen and Bauer if that were how it were to work out. Id be pretty happy with that. Still dont think Hultzen is quite worth 6, and don't see Bauer falling that far either.

At this point, Im still with Purke, Gray, and Jungmann at 6. If somehow those three are gone, Id be fine with Hultzen but I doubt all three are gone.

They also bought into Cole going over Rendon.

Bundy is now 7-0 on the season with 52 strikeouts and 2 walks.  He has two no-hitters and two one-hitters.  Its probably between him an Guerrieri for the best prep arm in the draft, though Archie Bradley has pitched ridiculously well too.  I still want to see more of some of the top pitchers before I get a preference for who I would take, but Hultzen and Bundy are currently at top of my list.  Not so hot on Sonny Gray.

I'd still be on board with drafting JBJr with that #6 pick.  Having him between Harper and Werth in 2013 would be pretty sweet.

Hultzen and Jungmann look pretty good to me, too.

Totally not on board with a high school pitcher at that #6 slot.  This is the last shot they have for a while at the top of the draft (hopefully) - I want someone with a bit less bust potential, especially given this DC's (albeit short) history with high school pitchers.

I have no interest in re-hashing the HS/College debate that seems to happen every year, so I'll simply say, IMO talent is talent, whether it is HS/JUco/College.  I know college pitchers have a slightly better success rate and that most people prefer them.  Personally, I have no problem with taking a high school player over a college player, but only the right HS players (I would have taken Zach Wheeler in a heartbeat if he fell to us in '09).  There is no reason, though, to exclude HS players from the conversation.  All players should at least be considered.  Based off of Rizzo's preference, it seems likely they won't take one.

Rizzo can't afford to wait on HS talent.

It's been happening every few pages in this thread as well. I agree with you FWIW.

As always, I'm a fan of college players early, high school players late.

Gray has the second best stuff in the draft. If not for his size, he's just a tick below Cole.

Id still take Purke ahead of him because I believe Purke will finish the season strong and re-establish himself, but if not Purke, Im hoping Gray is there at 6.

Not doubting his stuff, but he looks like a reliever to me.  I don't see the slider or changeup transitioning to the MLB.  His fastball and curve are good (ok, the curve is great) though.  Personally, I would rather take a handful of other players than him with the first pick.

I know we're not in the market for drafting a reliever at 6, but like some have said in favor of Hultzen(not the relieving part, the higher floor), having that as a fall back gives him a higher floor.

I dont think there's any problem with him being a starter. Two plus pitches, and two others that are works in progress. Some guys drafted in the top ten don't even have those two plus pitches to begin with.

But if all he does is become a closer, then we still got an impact performer at 6. As a fallback, not a bad option.

I've seen a few of his games, I'm just not sold on taking him over other guys.  He has a pretty high ceiling, I'll give you that much, but I just don't see it coming together for him.  Give me Purke, Hultzen, Jungmann, Bundy, or JBJ over him at pick 6 (not necessarily in that order).  I'm not saying there is not a rationale for taking him at 6, but personally I wouldn't want it.

Another recent mock, by Jason Churchill:
http://prospectinsider.com/view/draft-weekly:-m's-targets,-davis,-mock/

Interestign in that its the first time Ive seen Francisco Lindor pegged to us at 6. Kid seems to be all over the board. Some love his defense and bat, and have him top ten. Some really question his bat and have him in the last half of the first. Even if you love his bat, I still dont think he's a top ten kid in this draft. Based on his position I get the premium tag, but there are too many arms at the top IMO.

Especially since he was taken over Purke, Jungmann, and even Hultzen. I admit Purke is sliding at the moment, Im just confident that once he's in the full swing of things, he's a true elite talent. So my opinion on him is definitely based on a strong close to the season. If he doesn't close strong, he's not worth the pick, because he's going to slide and command a huge bonus no matter what. If he fel to 23, he might be worth the gamble but the price tag would still be huge.
