I'll post it again since people are still arguing, does any one have a better source saying no service time?

http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2003/01/transactions-glossary.html

until someone has a better source, I'm going with him earning service time

The owner of cot's was hired as an expert by Baseball Prospectus. He has emailed me personally to settle disputes on the board before. He is an impeccable source.

I have a huge meeting today that I'm already boned on, no way I'm gonna be prepared? His address is on the site, can you take care of it?

PDF p.94, numbered page 82

I'm not sure this supports your argument.

Quote
(1) One full day of Major League service will be credited for
each day of the championship season a Player is on a Major League
Club’s Active List.
A total of 172 days of Major League credited
service will constitute one full year of credited service. A Player
may not be credited with more than one year of credited service, 172
days, in one championship season. Major League service will be
computed commencing with the date of the first regularly scheduled
championship season game, through and including the date of the
last regularly scheduled championship season game. This rule shall
apply uniformly to all Players and all Clubs notwithstanding differences
in a particular Club’s schedule.

(2) For purposes of calculating credited service, a Player will be
considered to be on a Club’s Active List if:

(a) placed on a disciplinary suspension by a Club, the Vice
President, On-Field Operations or the Commissioner, or on the
Disabled List; or

(b) called to active military duty for up to two years or if called
to emergency duty by the National Guard for a period of up to
thirty days.

If being on the DL meant you were considered to be on a Club's Active List, wouldn't it specifically say so as it did in (2)(a) and (b) above, for suspensions and active duty military service?

Tom, you are having a rough day. 2a specifically mentions the DL.

JZ had 168 days of service last year even with TJ.

No he didn't.  Cots says he had

Colin Cowherd basically had a eulogy for the dude.  Gawd, I can't listen to this anymore.  I'm going to lunch.

Eh. The success rate of TJ surgery is high enough that I'm not concerned.

Injuries happen.  It's just bad luck.  And any comments about his mechanics are stupid.  Mark Prior had great mechanics and he was trainer's nightmare!

Only bright spot, is that it is his elbow and not his shoulder.  Many pitchers have come back from TJ surgery and been successful.

Precisely why I'm going to stay away from ESPN for the next week or so. They'll all act like this is the end of his career, when in reality, the numbers are in his favor.

for them it is, their outlook isn't ever very long. Listen to any of their analysts and you'd think every team was in win now mode. Minor leaguers are barely mentioned in discussions of trades, their non-mlb specific personalities seem to not know who anyone but the stars are

edit, the only thing worse is 106.7- yesterday Brian Mitchell was arguing to a fan that a baseball roster has multiple backups at every position - I think he just pulled the depth chat, look at one position, attempted to pronounce the names and assumed they were all left fielders

Tim Kurkjian, who lives in the area and is one of the best writers (and human beings) in the business, was on this morning and said it's a shame for Stephen, the team and the fans because so much was expected and he was delivering on his end of things.  But also kind of alluded to the point we shouldn't have to just rely on a rookie pitcher and this club would do good if they added a few more pieces, which obviously has been my point since day one.

Said as far as the injury goes, TJ surgery is a cakewalk compared to coming back shoulder/labrum surgery.  So if there is a positive, he'll come back stronger than ever and would probably take the same timetable JZ had.

Jayson Stark answered the service time question in his chat. I wish I was wrong.

Quote
First off, it won't delay his service time. He'll be on the major-league disabled list for the next year, so he'll accumulate service time as if he were active. So that part doesn't help the Nationals in any way, and it will cost them millions because he won't be pitching and drawing crowds. I also don't think it's "inevitable" that a guy who throws that hard will have Tommy John surgery. Did Nolan Ryan ever have it? Look, they all get hurt. You can count on one hand the number of starters who have been around a decade and haven't been on the DL. But that doesn't mean this isn't a tough, tough day for the Nationals -- and, as I said earlier, for the whole sport.
