UZR isnt involved, but there is a defensive component for the old guys.  Beats me how it was calculated.

I was listening to the Baseball Today podcast a few minutes ago, and Keith Law said that he was told he can factor in "best future promise" when he votes for Rookie of the Year. That should get Harper some extra votes, but IMO they should only look at what the rookies did this season.

Harper has 4 WAR - over 1 win better than Frazier.  It should be between Harper and Wade Miley.  Harper has been on the upswing and on a contending team - Miley has neither of those thigns going for him.

Mike Trout is at a ridiculous 9.5 WAR.

Season awards don't care about a player's team. If they did, no one would care about Trout

"best future promise" makes me wonder if he voted for Angel Berroa.

With Harpers' 20 th HR last night I was curious about Tony Conigliaros' rookie season when he hit 24 HR's at age 19.He now stands alone in 2nd place having passed Mel Ott.

Harper has hit 20 in 132 games and 512 AB's

Conigliaro hit 24 in 111 games and 404 AB's.

I am sure you can make an argument about ball park size etc. Congrats Harp and what a tragedy that Conigliaros career and path to HOF greatness was certainly cut short by an errant pitch.

It is hard to imagine, but before the Conigliaro beaning, I  don't think there was a requirement to wear a batting helmet.  Conig has kind of a plastic sleeve inside to dome part of his cap and no ear flap.  The pitch hit his cheekbone, unprotected.

What killed him before his time was a stroke at age 37, which debilitated him for 8 years before he passed.

here's where we stand among offensive rookies:

RK   PLAYER         TEAM   AB   R   H   2B   3B   HR   RBI   SB   CS   BB   SO   AVG   OBP   SLG   OPS   WAR
1   Norichika Aoki   MIL   495   76   142   36   4   10   48   28   7   42   53   .287   .354   .436   .790   3.4
2   Yonder Alonso   SD   524   46   144   35   0   9   60   3   0   59   96   .275   .350   .393   .743   1.3
3   Bryce Harper   WSH   512   93   134   23   9   20   56   17   6   53   118   .262   .332   .459   .791   4.1
4   Zack Cozart   CIN   541   72   133   32   4   15   34   4   0   31   109   .246   .289   .403   .692   2.9

It looks like Bryce has a pretty good shot of winning this thing.  Miley is the only other real competitor 16-11, 3.32 ERA, 187 IP

I'm sick in the head. I think way more about offseason moves, next year's team, and Bryce Harper's eventual free agency than I do about this year and the upcoming playoffs.

For instance, if Bryce averages just 32 homers over his first 11 seasons, he'll have 352 before he turns 30!

Players started to wear helmets in the 40s.

It became required in the late 50s.

Well before Tony C's injury.

Edit:   I just Googled.  A couple of sites say helmets not required until 1971.

Are you getting your stats from Baseball Reference?  Fangraphs shows a different WAR amount for Bryce today.

Once again, something new.  I exported the NL Rookie WAR leaderboards for both batting and pitching to get combined totals.  0.3 away from Mel Ott (Another couple home runs and I think he makes it).

With another great game last night, Bryce Harper is about to catch the great Mel Ott for most fWAR in a teenage season.  By their metrics he's been worth half a win in the past two nights. :panic:

Must burn some "Nats" fans on here that Bryce has the nerve to be so good so soon. Such arrogance!  He should defer to the vets!

I cannot think of one rational reason to not like this kid. He does everything the right way, especially considering his youth. Kid has the pontentially, but more importantly, the heart to be one of the best to ever step out on a diamond. What's not to like?

I'll be interested to see if he can get to 5 WAR. It'll probably be because he had a good UZR in the last week

Quote from: Adam Kilgore
I’ll go record to say that whatever happens in the rookie of the year voting, Bryce Harper is going to win the National League MVP in 2013. The quick version goes something like this: The league overwhelmed Mike Trout at 19, and at 20 he is about to win the AL MVP over a slugger poised to claim the Triple Crown. Harper had his struggles, but for two long stretches he murdered the ball, played a premium defensive position at a high level and ran the bases like a freight train. What he has done at 19 has perhaps been unprecedented; what he could do at 20 is unthinkable.

I am so excited to see what he will become next year, believe me. And I know everyone else is too. While I am excited for the rest of this season and the postseason I cannot wait for next year. It's going to be unreal.

Mike Trout, I'd say. I know I know heresy. But god is Harper good at this age. Imagine what he'll be like at 25...
